Is there a way when I upload pictures I can stop them appearing at the top of the home screen for everyone to see?

Yes, you choose everyone, everyone registered, or just you on the album you are uploading to... if you log out you can see, for example, which albums people chose everyone registered. What you can’t do is choose everyone to see it, but not upload it to the top of the screen though.
You can upload as an attachment which is better if you are writing an advert for example.
