Meindl Dovre , Brandecosse or Altberg

My altberg defender have had their day and really fancy going for something better.

opinions ?

Think carefully about what you want from a boot. I bought a pair of Lowa Tibets last year. They are comfortable and good for walking on the flat, in the woods etc.

But in the mountains on rough ground they are.not nearly stiff enough to support scramblng up, down or across steep slopes. But then a stiff mountain boot such as the Sacarpa Manta Pro is hard work on the flat.

I have Scarpa Manta which I wear with yeti gaiters which are good for everything but tend to wear them when weather is particularly rubbish.

There are so many boots out there now your spoilt for choice, I have recently favoured Salomon Quest 4 (or similar) Gtx for stalking and love them, nice support, very comfy when worn all day, fairly light and not too hot.

The only downside is that there is a lace loop right where you want to attach normal gaiters so you need to put the gaiters hook offset or on the next lace up.

I have the Meindl, had them re soled this year, great boot and they fit me.
If you can, shop around and try on the different makes, the sizes and widths differ a fair bit between manufacturers, buy by what fits you best, the marked sizes are just guidance

Can’t fault these and I’ve used Mendel and altberg - but I buy these haix now

I was just giving my Meindl 's some TLC the other evening and though how great an investment they've been! There on the way out, so I'm drawn to another pair as they've been so good, outlasting two previous pairs of Harkila's by a very very long way. I do however like the look and feel of the Brandecosse boots and would like to hear peoples opinions on them...

I own meindl Dovres and love them. We are issued with Altbergs in work and again good boots. I have had the Haix and they were very comfortable from the box. As said previously I would think about what you are going to be using them for and go from there. You won’t fault the meindl

Why don’t you get them re soled?

Still a Meindl guy.....many years now. The Fearless Leader has Brandecosse, and they are undefeated so far also.....

I was looking at the same 3 !!!! Then bought Crisp, best boots I ever had :-)

Meindl for me. I look after them, giving them a bit of the Meindl sports wax treatment every now and then, and they last years. Super comfortable out of the box too.

Altberg rabys are a great step up from the defender. I have both and do use the defender for lightweight stuff. But the raby is a way better boot.

I prefer the Altbergs, just make sure that they are the civilian spec ones. The cheaper mil suplrus ones are made with lower quality leather and need a good wearing in. The civilian spec ones have always been extremely comfortable from the off.

I'm not a fan of the Haix boots, they're lined with a gore-tex type liner and are far too hot in the summer. I also find them to be heavy, with a really thick sole which I feel makes them rather unwieldy.

I am currently using Dovre Extreme (high leg) for high-ground and Altberg Defender (low leg) for summer / arable and rate them both.

However, at the tail end of last year I purchased a pair of Brandecosse Rubicon for use on the peg and they are a thing of beauty. The leather is fantastic, the workmanship second to none, the service from Brandecosse is exemplary. I will be looking very, very closely at their high-leg stalking boots when the time comes and, assuming that the fit is good for my foot, they will be the ones that I go for.

I've had and worn out, lechameau, which I liked. Albert, which took some wearing in and we're never that comfortable, cracked up fairly quickly. Meindle douvre which have been very comfortable and given me a few years stalking. Now being used as work boots as they just began to allow some moisture through. I would buy again. Had another pair of lechameau for stalking and have just bought a pair of brendecosse high leg at the show. They look very well made, are a little stiffer than the others except the alt berg. They do offer a lot of support and I look forward to seeing how they do on the first few stalks. Not massively more expensive than any of the top brands.
I had been looking at the hanwag as a contender.

Altberg for me ,like most people have tried many. I have a pair of Altbergs that maybe done 6 seasons beating ,they have now got a hole worn by the laces but still waterproof. There factory is just up The road from me , manufactured in God's country Yorkshire .

Hanwag Trappers if you can find them, or Hanwag Tatra Tops if you can’t get Trappers.
The best boots I’ve ever owned, and they can be re-soled. I use mine for work as well (landscape surveying) and sometimes walk 15-20km+ in a day with no foot fatigue, carrying camera, tripod, pack etc.
I also have a pair of Hanwag Banks II for the summer when it’s dry...
