Meopta Optika5 vs Optika6

I am in the market for a new (maybe second hand) scope and think I’m largely settled on a Meopta Optika5 or Optika6. I just can’t decide between the two and would like some forum opinions.

The rifle is a 6.5x55, currently with a crap 8x56 scope (nothing wrong with 8x56, just that this old thing, branded “Nikko” really is a bit crap.) The rifle is used for casual range plinking between 100m and 300m, and hunting applications when possible. At the moment, the range time is more like 80%, due to circumstances and opportunity. Currently has 1-inch ring mounts on a Picatinny rail.

I have seen for sale locally an Optika6 3-18x50 RD with 4C reticle for €600.

Then there’s an Optika5 4-20 x 50 RD, BDC3 reticle, 1-inch centre diameter, for €485.

There’s also a Meosport R 3-15x50 RD, also 4C reticle, available for €500.

Prices are all within range and saving €100 is not the overriding factor. I’m tempted to try the BDC3 reticle and the extra magnification on the Optika5 might be useful at the range (but probably not if I’m honest). However, is the Optika6 glass going to make a significant difference in a highseat in low light conditions?

Have read a tonne of online reviews and they’re all largely positive for all three options, so not really a help to me.

Would appreciate real world experience and knowledge from the SD forum!

The Optika 6 is very good, I have no direct experience of very expensive glass to compare it to, but I've surprised people on more than one occasion when they ask, in the dying light, whether I can still see through it. It's a reasonably heavy and bulky scope, the zoom ring, illuminator control, parallax, etc are all quite chunky by design.

The Optika 5, I think, is the same glass as the 6 but being a 1inch tube theoretically won't be as bright.

When I first went for Meopta everyone told me they were very underrated and great value. I'd tend to agree and I don't think you'll be disappointed whatever you go for. I wanted a do-everything scope to go on a do-everything rifle when I bought my 3-18x50, and it's certainly filled the criteria.

In it's price class the Optika 5 and 6 are hard to beat considering they're Meoptas "budget line". There is no difference in glass between them. The Optika 5 is a 25mm tube, generally shorter and lighter. Optika 6 30mm tube, bit longer/heavier with a few more reticle choices. Tube diameter has no bearing on light transmission. I have 3 Optika 5's a 2-10, 3-15 and a 4-20 and rate them highly as an all rounder.

I've got an Optika5 4-20 x 50 on my 6.5 CM, more than happy with it. Excellent value, I can't say how much more light the 30mm tube would let in but haven't really found the 1" much different to my Schmidt and Benders.

A persistent misconception.
Yes I've heard it in a few gunshops when looking at scopes. Another one I heard is that a bigger objective will give a wider field of view. Its usually the opposite in any glass I've owned

@SimpleSimon @zerovarm @Keith Edmunds Thanks for the responses. You've all mentioned using either Optika5 or Optika6 as "all rounders". Are you using them both at the range and stalking? What kind of stalking are you mostly doing? Can you comment on which application you think they perform better?

I've found a second hand Optika6 at a pretty nice price. I'm just concerned that it's going to be a bit big. It's slightly longer than my current scope, although not by much, and for sure it's going to be heavier. Nonetheless, if I'm mostly at the range these days and the Optika6 is the best scope for that application, then maybe that's the way to go. Nonetheless, I don't want to limit my stalking performance when opportunities arise.

I use my Optika 5 for stalking - anything from 20 metre woodland muntjac up to around 180 metre - so no really long range stuff but as a stalking scope it does the job well. I use the PA a lot when woodland stalking to dial in and out to see if there is obstructions such as branches in between me and the quarry. I bought mine when Optics Warehouse had a sale on, from memory it was around £350 which was a steal.

Stalking, foxing, range work and night vision add on compatible. If weight or size is an issue IMO the Optika 5 4-20x50 is hard to beat out of them all. Beware though the Z-Plus reticle is very fine, albeit with a nice 1.5 MOA dot. I have read reports of the reticle being lost a bit in woodland etc. Z-Plex reticle is a standard Duplex
On a side not Meopta.eu still have a few Optika 6 models and the Optika 5 4-20x44 for sale. They send direct to the UK and as a first time customer you will get 10% off and free delivery.

I don't do any range work as a "thing" but I've used my Optika 6 on steels out to 450 yards. Mine has the 4a illuminated reticle and standard turrets, but I think they do ballistic turrets and different reticles as well... On deer I've shot from 50 yards to 150 yards in the woods and on open fields, fine sunny days, drizzle, twilight whatever and never felt it wasn't the right thing to be using. The illuminated dot is nice to have, I wouldn't be without on any scope now that I've had one with it...

So out of I interest, why is there no interest in the meosport? Aren’t they slightly better glass than the optikas? They’re certainly less bulky and don’t have the unnecessary tactical aesthetics

The meosport is a very good scope for the money.... ive used one on my 308 and then moved to my 223 where it now lives as an all round scope for mainly vermin control. It has a nice fine reticle and parallax adjustment so can deal with closer range stuff (shot many squirrels at pheasant feeders) and it has diallable turrets if needed (not my thing to twiddle so left alone)..
Very clear optics and has stood up to falling over in my truck several times!.

All in all a good little scope... and I have owned and still own the 'premium' brands.

There is certainly interest in the Meosport from my side, for the reasons noted by @harrygrey382 and @monarman - it's a slightly smaller scope and has the tactile turrets. I was keen for the BDC3 reticle on the Optika5, but the 4C reticle on the Meosport looks OK too. The only down sides I've read about the Meosport is that the magnification adjustment on the left is HUGE and the supplied rings are also extremely high.

For those that have the Meosport, did the supplied rings work for you? If not, roughly what height did you need (I know all rifles are different and I'm just after a general guideline)?

I'm waiting to hear back regarding a very cheap second hand Optika6 I found (€450). The advert was a bit old, so I don't know if it's still available. Otherwise, I think I'll get the Meosport. Cheapest I've found is now €425 new.

All I‘ve seen of the MeoSport so far (3) is fairly positive. But only time will tell.
The reticle is VERY fine. So a working illumination is a must for any stalking purposes.

I reckon that’s a great choice! From reviews I’ve read it may have a slight edge in glass over the optika range, but either way they’re all good choices. I’ve been researching a good value scope to go on a 7x57 and reckon I’ve narrowed it down to older Zeiss conquest and meosport (which are essentially the same I think), although if I found a Meostar in budget I’d jump on it…
