midge repellant

a friend of mine uses vitamin B tablets from the health shop and says they seem to keep the midges of him but ive not tried them myself although ive tried just about everything else inc. avon sss and have found nothing that keeps them away for more than an hour except a net.

If you are going to buy the Avon Skin So Soft make sure it is the one in the BLUE bottle and not the pink.

The blue one is the one that contains citronella. Check the back of the bottle for details.

Remember that any of these repellents will require topping up at the very minimum of half an hour from the last application!!!! They will rapidly loose their potency after this time. A lot of people think that they will last all day but unfortunately that is not the case.

SSS

This months which magazine has reviewed midge repellents and also included Avon SSS in the mix. One of the best ones was Boots extra strength formula as it was 50% deet. In a scientific environment the Avon did no good at all. (God knows where they get the testers tho!)

I have used the boots spray and gel for a couple of years now. Dont however put it on by hand and then use said hand for squeaking foxes.

Au tan yellow and red tin it is with out doubt thee best and i should know as i stalk the ares were the midge is king.

well ill tell you what i use , its the stuff what people spray on horses to keep the horse flies at bay , smells of avacardo exelent stuff if found it works on all insect nasties !!

cheers
lee

Bog Myrtle soap, not as bad as it sounds ! wont make you smell like a jesse either.
Chain smoking, a must for the serious stalker !

Avon skin so soft.

Failing that just rub bog myrtle on your skin - it gorws over most of Scotland i midgy areas.

Try and keep in the breeze and keep moving - it takes midges about 3 or 4 minutes t find you - they are attracted by CO2.

And make sure you are with somebody younger and tenderer than you are - imagine fillet steak vs old shoe leather.

Avon Skin So Soft far and away the best (I've been stalking over the years on the Scottish West Coast & Highland forestry areas).
If you can't get it on ebay or direct from Avon, I see the Tiso shops are now stocking it!! (expensive, though)

I used Avon SSS on a recent fishing trip to Perthshire. It works for me, but as others have said, it needs to be reapplied every hour or so.

I also used a net with a built in plastic visor. It worked well. I found the best way to keep the plastic visor in the right place was to wear a hat over the top of it. The net I use is made in Scotland and so is up to the task. I got it from John Norris of Penrith (fishing and clothing shop) for about £12.00.

I have heard that some people wear surgical gloves and keep their cuffs tight to their wrists with elastic bands.

I think the effect that the midgies have varies from person to person. I am a bit ginger and probably have some northern european genes, so they don't bother me too much. Its one of very few benefits !!!

Yup !

Avon SSS. You tend to smell like a tart's parlour, but never mind - you DO have a rifle to hand !

Eating Marmite helps... I eat loads and get very few bites! And I live in midge heaven. Marmite has certain vitamins that the midges dont like...

I have a fair old knowledge of this subject...........
The only thing that works is to soak yourself in a forty gallon barrell of diesel for four days before you go out.... simple as that ,, they wont come near you... As for a net , this might work where you come from , where i live the little feckers cary flick knives . They will eventully get in...
Widows son suggested SHOO , this is good stuff, but for Gods sake dont get it in your eyes .. I did and man that stuff stings.
my point is that all of these methods work to a certian extent , but those little bliters will always find a way. There will always be a little spot on you somewhere that you didnt get done , like one of your eye lids, or the inside of your ear,
They always beat me ,,, but some day... i will get my revenge..

I have a net thing with a plastic visor from john norris and it seems to work well if tucked tightly into my collar. This combined with gloves tucked well into tight wrist bands see me just about bite free.

That is, once I sussed that they were sneaking in through the under arm vents in my jacket and feasting on arms and zipped them up as well.
