Modern cars trying to be too clever and multiple electrical problems!!!

Cars are just nuts and bolts (and now electricity) to me,
I have done the fancy car thing in the past but prefer to invest my money than pish it away.

Every one has different priorities in life so if a fancy German car floats your boat then go for it. Just PAYG do not own it.

I owned n 85 series lll 4.2 Sovereign for a while, back in the dear dead days, BRG metallic with magnolia leather (that lovely smell...), and walnut veneer (sigh..)
Been running a 91 Jap import MX5 for the last 23 years.........most reliable and most fun car I've ever had, and I can fix it when necessary.

Doing a job at an independent garage recently and apparently the latest BMW’s wont allow non-BMW garages to work on them. Must be internet linked to BMW to unlock electronic handbrake, reset service indicator, etc. Oh and BMW charge for this remote service. Won’t ever be buying one of them
Gateway. Like I said. Absolutely disgusting practice and no way will I ever buy a car with that restriction.

My old X5 will be getting a good going over then kept as it’s pretty easy to work on much like all older BMW

The first thing anyone buying a new petrol or diesel car needs to do is to get a suitable diagnostic tool, in the case of my 2016 Skoda diesel, an OBDll/EOBD+CAN....around £20-£25 on ebay when I got mine.
If a warning light appears on the dash, you just plug this in (there's a socket under the dash), and it tells you what the problem is............or you can take/tow the car in and pay a garage anything from £25 upwards to plug theirs in...

Yes, i bought one of them OBD11 thingys, for my skoda diesel 08 reg, my engine management light kept showing so before mot’s i parked near garage, plugged it in , cleared the faults, sorted! It ran sweet as a nut, regular oil changes, 295,000😈

My VW Transporter didn't like it one little bit when I topped up with AddBlue when it asked me to... while the engine was running... it took an age for the warning light to knock itself out... but it did eventually.

Mine is as good as gold with ad blu , hardly uses any and i just stop fill it up then start up again and carry on ?

Saying that the DPF warning light came on tonight though so the OBD reader will be out at work tomorrow !

Worst thing ever for diesels is all the modern emissions guff !

90% of dpf issues aren’t the dpf mind. Something usually causes them to block. Usually a far cheaper sensor or 5th injector etc

Mine's ok when you switch the engine off, then put a drum of Ad-blue in... try doing it with the engine running :norty:.. took about two weeks for the light to sort itself out 🤗

Yes, I believe so.
Keep up the good work... (trying to educate folks that need enlightening.) You deserve a Stalking Directory medal.
I'd settle for some decent whiskey to quell the exasperation, but appreciate the encouragement.

On topic, its starting to look like they're going to repeal or at least lessen the restrictions on diesel emissions here. It's costing the agriculture trades too much money and lost time, so they're going to start there. Actually, I think it went into effect on Jan 1st (diesel agg vehicles now have to run at least 100 hrs after a low/no DEF fault is tripped, before going into limp mode). This way any sensor failures will not impact planting or harvest seasons.

A lot if tractors and diggers have been like that for yrs

I mind a story about a fitter who started up on his own.
Put a load of extra work lights on a Jcb , couldnae get them to work.
Checked his wiring 3 times.
Had to phone an actual Jcb mechanic, he needed a proper jcb computer to tick a box to allow the extra currant.

I have heard off tractors diesel pumps being turned off by satelite if not paid the Hp or dealers bills

My bloody pick up was dead as a door nail on mon morn. Sat for 2 days, been cold -5 or even as lkw as 8 below.
But usually a good starter.

Got battery charged alk fine.
Then loiks out window last night fog lights are on, key not even in ignition.
So disconnected battery.
Pulled the fuse
Now the fcuking headligbts are coming on when u turn it off and open the door.
Dont rhink my indicators are working either now.

Bloody motor
A bit more fiddli g tomorrow but god knows wot it is.
Just bloody hope its not mice chewing wiring loom

3 year old xc90 T8. Decent enough on forest tracks, in snow. Quite quick for a big car and a good tow car.
Electrics have let it down. Software drives me insane, along with the distracting ‘safety’ alerts.
Petrol plug in hybrid is ok but not ideal for long distance towing - small tank and 19mpg. Range anxiety!
It’s January, half meter of snow and of course the heater is the latest to pack in.

I have one of the last Gen2 XC60s. Took me an absolute age to find one with the spec' and mileage I wanted. It has just enough kit to keep me happy. My wife has a year old XC40 hybrid, which has the abominations of which you speak. Over-speed alarm, lane control, touchscreen (who the bloody hell thought THAT was a good idea in a car???), and that stupid 'collision avoidance' system that slams the brakes on whenever you get close to a wall. And as for that 'stop-start' stupidity? Don't get me started 😡
