Monocular advice

How’do! Trust this finds you all well.

Ok - the short version is I’m after some advice on the purchase of a decent monocular - ideally with a budget of around £500 (I appreciate it probably isn’t as straight forward as a £1000 set of binos should be half bat as I’m only buying half.... 😂😂) .... Anyhoo, your thoughts, as ever, will be greatly appreciated!!

For the keener readers amongst you, or the bored, I shall expand slightly so you understand my thinking. I’m left eye dominant. My left eye is classed as better than “normal” with a score of 6/5 - put it this way - when you go for an eye test - I can read the serial number on the bottom of the chart with my left eye.... my right eye - is probably 6/10 if not worse. Subsequently I don’t really use both of my eyes - as a child (a year or two back now) they classed my right eye as being lazy and I had to wear patches and all sorts of carry on. The weird reality was that my left eye was so good - my right eye just didn’t bother! Anyhoo. There we go. So, basically, if I look through a pair of binos I can end up with a slightly blurry picture as my right eye can’t focus hence I end up closing my right eye and just see with my left eye!

For quite some time now I’ve just used a very old pair of pocket field glasses - they’ve been a fair few places round the world and served more than me very well. However, whilst they’re useful at seeing stuff in the distance (guess it would be silly if they weren’t ha ha) the image quality isn’t as good as I’d like it to be. Stalking out on Arran last week and really struggled to see a red hind sitting amongst ferns and heather which I could see clearly through my scope.

So, in conclusion, I’d like something half decent but it seems foolish to buy a car and then ride around on only two wheels.....!!

Cheers!!

If you were with a 'pro' stalker on Arran I would be very surprised if they didn't have one of these:

If limited to single eye use, there is nothing that will beat a good Ross glass, even today.

Trouble is finding a good one, I've been through about 20 and only kept these two larger ones.

The aluminum one will keep up with a Modern Gray's of Inverness.

The brass one will beat a Gray's easily and will go toe to toe with a modern Swarovski Spotter on low mag for image sharpness and clarity on a bright sunny day.

Where they lose out is in field of view and low light transmission as the glass lenses were hand cut and polished (hence why some are near perfect but others sub par).

Takes time and skill to learn how to use one but you won't find a better system.

PM me if you would like to pursue this further, but no, I'm not selling either of mine! :p

I shall have a look! Thanks as ever for the info!
I always thought telescopes were for looking at the stars.... or the woman across the road..... 😳😂

I bought a vortex solo ,can't fault it as with their scopes too,I got the one with the range finder reticule not that you need it but once you get into it it's good for a quick estimate.

Wow even with the range finder element they’re very reasonable! Do you find the quality does the job?

Yep it's every bit as good as needed ,it's clear and not to heavy ,I use it wildfowling on the marsh takes up half the space as bino's.
Jon
Perfect! Cheers! At that price is seems worth just going for one and always considering upgrading at a later date if so required! Mind you, based on the two days of Guided Red Stag Stalking I managed to squeeze in this year - I’d have been no better off with the Hubble Telescope!! 😂😂

One of the issues with a monocular is that they are not as "steady" as binos and you get more wobble. A case in point is a mate of mine who does a lot of stalking . He only has one eye but having tried numerous monoculars over the years now just sticks to binos for this reason.
