MOT could be scrapped

God help us! there are that many cars and bikes on the road now in dangerous condition even with in date MOT's

If I had wanted to, it was like shooting fish in a barrel when i was a copper..... i was traffic and a prohibition qualified officer with a military background that included servicing and inspecting vehicles..... mostly i gave an old fashioned rollicking rather than a ticket unless it was dangerous.

make it every two years and half the people won't realise that a percentage of their car has fallen off before then!

Spot on I'm 999 also 👌 will just make the safety situation worse than ever.

Like most things left to the market - it would sort itself out in time.

Once insurance companies put an additional premium in excess of an MOT test there would be no saving for the average user.

It might save a few quid for the person who uses a vehicle sparingly, second/classic vehicle etc.

It still wouldnt prevent prosecution for driving an unroadworthy vehicle - worn tyres etc.

Just about sums up this out of touch, inept cabal that's "governing" this country.Just like the HGV Driver shortage that never existed..just made up as they go along.
Here's a idea for you..get rid of green levvy taxes on our energy bills.Better than saving £55 on a MOT😣

Here in Germany the mot "Tuv" runs test free from a new sale for the first three years then every two years, after that, always has and it works well.

there are also a lot more differences between the TUV and the MOT though. Is it still the same where if you change the brand/model of tyre on your motorbike you have to the it back to the TUV.? spares are more expensive as they all have to have separate TUV marking etc.

Mind you, looking forward to going back to Germany in 5 weeks ... first time for 21/2 years, normally over there at least once a year if not more

I can't really see a problem, to be honest. The MOT extension period at the start of lockdown didn't cause any issues as far as I know? And in any case, a valid MOT doesn't guarantee a roadworthy vehicle at any time other than immediately following the test. In fact, to my mind it could easily be rendered valueless the moment the owner drives it away from the testing station

At present it's the only compulsory visit to the garage required, if this requirement is removed many vehicles would not see any sort of safety inspection or service unless it broke down. The Mot is certainly not a guarantee of roadworthiness and a vehicle can still break down, but surely we need some sort of compulsory safety inspection?

British mot is hardly an extensive test anyhow IMHO it's just a basic safety test having seen plenty of vehicles with a fresh test cert that shouldn't have passed I'd be very cynical of a lot of test centres
A friend of mine bought a freshly tested vehicle a couple of years ago it was tested again here (Ireland) and failed on over 40 things some of them structural such as body mounts and chassis

Sorry. Going to upset the apple cart by saying I think it’s a good idea, most people that knowing drive unroadworthy cars don’t care about an MOT anyway, and an MOT is only good for the time the MOT is done…nothing stopping the car being unroadworthy an hour later….

It’s as if we’re being governed by a group of ludicrously rich idiots who simply come up with the first idea that pops into their heads in order to distract away from their utter failure to improve things for anything more than a tiny majority of their chums. Next they’ll want to build a garden bridge ….. oh, hang on…. 😂😂

In the context of this , you have to remember that cars over 40years old, are in most cases exempt from the MOT, these are vehicles with single line braking systems, polluting exhausts, some have no seat belts fitted, etc, so if it's OK for them, I don't see why modern cars need an MOT every year.
