Mounted head or Skull Mount?

I had my first red stag done as a shoulder mount; my first roe was a tatty mid-moult thing, so I only had its antlers kept, but I shot a much better buck as my 2nd, so had it done as a shoulder mount. If/when I get my first sika, fallow, muntjac (Boar?!?), they'll get shoulder-mounted too. Space may become an isue, especially as I'm going to have the 5 antelope from S. Africa done as shoulder mounts too for my home-office.....:-D

Depends on the species to some degree, and it depends on the quality of the trophy, and it depends on whether I have the room, and it depends on...

As an American, I imagine that some would have preconceived ideas about my preferences, but those folk would likely be wrong.

To start with, I spent some 'formative' years in Germany. As a consequence I really like drillings and quality 'combination' firearms. I also like skull mounts. I have several skull mounts of roe my Dad shot. I have a skull mount of a capital ("gold medal") 14-point red stag he shot, and two nice chamois, all as skull only as that was the fashion at the time - mid-'60s.

Some animals are represented better by shoulder mounts. Caribou, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful trophies on the planet, and a shoulder mount shows a mature bull in all his glory. I have two shoulder-mounted and several skull-mounted. A whitetail on the other hand, with it's generally monotonic coloration, (much like a roe), is not particularly 'enhanced' by a shoulder mount in my opinion. That said, I would like at least ONE shoulder mount of a roe.

Of the North American sheep, the Dall is another spectacular shoulder mount in spite of being "monotonically" colored. Desert big horn on the other hand look best with a skull mount to my eye.

Mountain goats (Oreamnos americana) are similar to chamois in horn but not diminutive in body like the chamois. I like the chamois skull mount, but I prefer a half-body-mount or a rug for a mountain goat. Being diminutive, I think both the muntjac and the Chinese water deer are better displayed with shoulder mounts. Another small-of-horn animal that is an absolutely spectacular shoulder mount - second only to a good caribou bull - is the prong-horned antelope (Antilocapra americana).

So without going through every species we hunt, I will conclude with the comment that I like 'em both, and that more often than not, the animal and the circumstances dictate the "final resting form" more than fashion or my personal "likes". For me, respect for the animal is paramount. There are no Christmas or St Patrick's Day decorations hung on them. They are never rendered in some comical or 'humorous' dressing or poses. They are respected for 'giving their life' to me.

PS - On a side note - I'd kind of like to have one of my Dad's nice roe buck's racks shoulder-mounted. Do any of you know where I could get a good roe buck cape?
Thanks in advance.

As you know Andy i had my First Munti gold head mounted by Paul Taylor ( fab job! ) as I thought it deserved to be. Since then I have shot a gold Roe but didnt realise until it was scored. Buy that time it had been boiled out of course and now it is a skull mount. Im told I could get it head mounted by shooting a buck of the same age and using that for the antler to go onto. Thing is I consider that a bit of an alien concept, a bit lit a 'cut and shut' :).

I have several skull mounts around the house, including the only medal buck I've shot. I'd have more, but it's not me that makes the rules in our house ;)

The roe just made Gold but we'd gralloched it before we thought about a shoulder mount  I have another nice 6 point roe that has been shoulder mounted and is ready to be picked up from the taxidermist. I have no idea if it's a medal but that's not the point, it was the stalk I remember and I've always wanted a shoulder-mount roe so I decided to get this one done. Once I pick it up I'll post some pics.

The only shoulder mount I have is a muntjac, and I have to say that shoulder mounts look a lot better than skull mounts particularly when it comes to muntjac IMHO.

Having a replacement cape should not be a problem,as some say its like a cut and shut,i think its nice to put a good cape on a good set off antlers to enhance the mount, this morning i defrosted a stag cape from a keeper and it is smelly and green,i can not go a head with the work now until i get a replacement cape which is not a problem up here in the highlands but i would only want the best capes as not all capes are good,ie scars, torn ears hair loss, tick marks..roe buck replacment capes are an good option as most of the good bucks are taken in the spring when coats are ragged, also the hunters want to score there antlers which after some time drying can be scored, replacment capes can be a good option as one can pick out the best of capes to replace, you dont want to just look at a mount all your life you want to admire. most of the animals can be suplimented but some are more difficult as they may have a unique malformed pedical in which it could take a long time sourcing a replacment, all is possible,I look for capes of all kinds at all times to fulfill this criteria,I hope to make a dvd on how to cape and how to care for an animal to be caped as a lot of keepers hunters need to be educated in this area.
check out my web site as it has some tips on these issues, www.albahighlandtaxidermy.com also beware of taxidermists that birds are there best works as some dont realy know what a deer should look like.i have being a deerstalker all my life and make it my speciality, some that have been shown that has come back from the taxidermist on this directory is shocking for me to look at as i know what colour of eyes they should have for a start, you need the quality eyes not cheep jobs and the forms are not good from britain, all the best boys make there own forms, Things to look out for in future,it would be nice for you to have your dads gold mounted

All the best and happy hunting
