Mouse and rat traps

Mice are easy to trap with break back style traps. Set them in the right place and you dont even need to bait them as they just run over them

That’s a Mk4 fenn trap no? That’s what I have been using for the rats but as Rhodesianjess described, the mice often just get launched clear of the trap or the metal “goalposts”, as I call them, close over the top of the mouse as they are smaller than rats.

I have a series of tuned little nippers set all the time. You need to file and then sand down the setting pin and set very lightly. Bait wise hard chocolate heat up bait spike and push bit of chocolate on it. Alterntively half a brazil nut. Needs to be something they have to naw at.

For rats Fenn trap in tunnel box. I use 3 " square down pipe to guide rat over centre of trap.

fenns are a body grip trap, break backs are the tom and jerry style, single jaw moving from one side to the other generally. big advantage of break backs is they dont need to be checked every day fens and docs do

I always check traps regularly so no problems there.
I have some small Tom and Jerry traps somewhere. Just need to find them 🤦‍♂️

Put a six inch square 18 inch long box over the Mk 4 fen, mice don't get thrown clear.
Use a screwdriver under the pressure plate so you can bend the pressure plate down so the trigger point is 2=3 mm below the riser that prevents stones & soil from getting under the plate, this way it is so easy to set with a bit of wood baton, push the plate down until the riser stops you pushing down any further.
Never file the trigger, just use a screwdriver to pry up the little shelf on the pressure plate to make it more sensitive ( a little butter on the trigger helps).
You can bait it with Nuttella, peanut butter, or super glue some maze on the plate Fish oil from a tin of fish.
Always place the mk 4 sideways on, so it is like a scissor trap, a large critter gets crushed by the head & back end, humane & instant.
You can use 2 planks either end with a hole cut in the bottom to suit size of critter you intend to catch, 2.5 - 3inches should deter hedgehogs.

Whatever traps you use make sure to tether your mouse traps down with a piece of old bicycle brake cable or similar (the way a Fenn has a chain on it to stop it being dragged away) Otherwise I can guarantee that with both mice and rats present what will happen is that you'll catch a mouse in a trap and rat will make off with it, trap and all.

I bought 6 of these and so far have had no luck. I have used a dob of Peanut butter, a bit of chocolate, a bit of the rat poison block, a bit of whole wheat chocolate biscuit, a bit of cheese and a bit of fish stick but none of them have been touched.
I found a cheap Russian air rifle in the attic and so far I have managed to shoot 5 that came out during the day time.
