Moving from 17 hmr to 22lr

Always good to have a good RFD on your doorstep, and one that looks after you is worth cherishing.

How many shots are you taking a month? Does the quantity of your shooting make a vast difference in your costs?

I know the difference it makes in my range shooting, but I can get through a couple of boxes of .22LR for that, so SK Std Match at £7.80 is more palatable than RWS R50 at £15.00

hmr is already pushing £50.00 a hundred.

local variations in price likely due to when the RFD last stocked up.

Yeah the eley rounds 50 for £8 and haven’t really changed according to the shop when I asked but 17hmr just keeps creeping up and when’s it going to stop no doubt a year or 2 they will be £30 for 50 17 hmr rounds. 100 cci are at £15 so there’s a big difference on cost between the 2 calibres. The shops only a few mile away where as others are 15-20 mile away so it’s a no brainer and they do look after me I must say that.

As a percentage of what I was paying 3 years ago, I would say both 22 and 17 (and WMR, when I can find it!) Have risen equally. I may be odd and don't have a "pet" gun shop, I use where I can and have the best price within less than half an hour drive.

I had a 22 Sako PS94 varmint a few years ago and it was a fantastic gun, took hundreds of rabbits and a fair few foxes with it at all sorts of ranges. I don’t know why, but I decided that I wanted a 17HMR, probably because a few mates had them and I fancied a change. Paperwork filled out, variation received and I purchased a CZ 452 silhouette in 17HMR, a great make and model. I kept the rifle for probably a year at the most and then changed back to the .22LR However this time I purchased an old long barrelled CZ 452-2E-ZKM which was wicked accurate.

The 17HMR wasn’t for me. It is a fantastic round, shoots well out to 300yards and can punch well above its weight, but, the humble ‘two two’ was much more fun in my eyes. Quiet, accurate, cheap and in the right hands, deadly !

Keep the HMR, best thing to do is buy a cheap small freezer for 20 quid off the local sales pages and once you've filled it up with rabbits flog them, i get £2 a rabbit for raw dog food, pays for all the ammo and some kit as well
Having said that there’s no reason not to buy a 22lr, my CZ 452 cost me £175 and owes me nothing and plenty accurate.

I suppose it's all about the quantities of rabbits you shoot, if it's only a few dozen a year it's hardly worth changing, if you're shooting hundreds or thousands, it might save you a few quid.
I don't own either rimfire, the few hares and rabbits I shoot are all done using my .22 Hornet, I enjoy shooting it.

That is a lovely looking Hornet, what rifle is it please ?

Owning both calibres and using both a lot both have their advantages and disadvantages.
These days I only tend to shoot the hmr at night for the advantage of the calibres flat shooting but the cost of the ammunition is a drawback.
I have had various home rifles scince the calibre came out and between the ammo being inconsistent and a few of the rifles mediocre I have found as consistent a combination now as I have ever had using an anschutz 1717 which is now discontinued I think and Remington ammunition.
Anyway, I would still sell it if I thought I could upgrade to a .17 centrefire rifle for the same reasoning as I have the hmr on for which is longer range vermin as opposed to subsonic ammo and shorter ranges with .22lr.

Does anyone have a .17 centrefire rifle on their permit for the purpose of longer range vermin aswell as having another centrefire on for fox?
I am in Northern Ireland so liscencing here may differ.

It’s just beginning to hurt abit when buying rounds. 17 hmr is 100% the better calibre I’ll never argue that but it’s not a cheap little gun anymore
17 hornet and load your own.

Of you shoot enough rounds the loading kit will pay for itself pretty quickly.

Save your cases, add;

These bullets

A 10p primer and a few pennies of powder and you’re away……
