Muntjac tunnelling knife

Evening all, after suggestions for a suitable knife for tunnelling Muntjac as we seem to be getting quite a few about lately.

Shot one last evening & whilst I managed it with a bit more care & dexterity than I would a fallow, I found the Mora Companion to be a bit on the big side for tunnelling a Muntjac.

I’m happy with the blade length, but could go an inch or so shorter maybe, but it’s the depth of the blade that’s the issue. The Companion is only about 20mm deep but I reckon something around 12-15mm deep would be a lot easier to use.

I’m looking for a basic off the shelf knife that is similarly priced to the Mora. Anyone got any ideas??

I had thought along those lines Tim. I also wondered about taking a grinder to one of the spare Bokker knives I’ve got - taking 5mm or so off the spine of the blade. Just not sure whether it’d fit in the sharpener though after doing that.

Hultafors Precision Knife as in the link below, it is carbon steel, but it is without doubt the best for the job, even on Munty kids. It also doe Roe :

You don’t need to stick your knife in, one cut just under the tail will detatch half of its anus, stick your finger in and hook out the pipe and cut the rest of the anus and the pipe just pulls out and you can then strip and knot it.

The other option with a full bladder buck is tie off the poop tube split the aitch bone hang off one leg crack the pelvis and the whole lot is easy to tease out.

One of Stuart Mitchell’s Portland 90”s would fit the bill. The ultralight is particularly nimble.

Hultafors do as well but I find their handles too bulky on the small knives

Have seen the Mora one, to me the blade looks too small… it could be the handle just makes it look smaller.

I'd have thought the flex of a long fillet knife is the last thing you'd want for this

Short stiff blade. A decent 3.5" paring/vegetable knife would probably do

Full Bladder is a difficult one to get around! 3 out of the 5 I did this week had a full bladder!

One of Stuart Mitchell’s Portland 90”s would fit the bill. The ultralight is particularly nimble.

I will second that it's one of the most useful knifes I have ever used. Best knife I have ever owned.

Portland 90, tested on Muntjac, Roe and Fallow so far and I can’t fault it.

I use one of these. BRISA Fisher 110

I slightly reprofiled it and added scales. It will bleed a fallow and split the sternum, but delicate enough for muntjac.

Not sure I’d get my finger into such a tight cavity but will try this on the next Muntjac I shoot.

I now hang on a hook from one leg. Open stomach and find lower intestines. Push the pellets up and down to make an empty stretch. Cut in the middle of the empty stretch. Straight down through the chest and neck. Cut diaphragm and pull everything down. Single horizontal cut between a-hole and tail. Finger in through the cut to hook out the intestines, pull out and cut off. Repeat withe pee pipe and bladder. Seems to keep me and the carcas pretty clean. It took me a while to get the nack of the pee pipe.

Sorry I've read this like 5 times and am so confused

I've learned the tunneling way but plan on trying what I keep seeing on here. the make a slit twixt tail and bum pull it out and cut it while it's outside so am trying to understand


But when I read this its like you cut the rectum twice am I missing something

First push pellets out of the way and cut the intestine (and tie it I assume)

Then later hooking it out and cutting it
