My duck gun keeps failing to extract.

So duck season has started. Slow start, only got 2 so far.

Part of that is my gun. Il keep it short since its a simple problem.

My mossberg pump wich ran great this summer is now constantly failing to extract.

after shooting it wont pull out the shell.

I went trough the ABC of figuring out what it is and the shells get stuck, the extractor does its job but strips the rims.
It takes alot of force to remove the shells even with the cleaning rod.

How do i fix this, any ideas? it started as soon as i entered the duckboat and has progressively gotten worse. I do clean the chamber, should i lube it?

Rusty chamber?
not that i can see, i clean and oil the gun after every hunt since its not stainless. But i dont usually oil the inside of the barrel exept for longer storage.

It does seem related to the conditions of the hunt, havent had an issue before, i bought the gun this summer.

Il run a brass brush on a drill trough it for now, see if that solves it. Think lube would do any harm?

Bit of a long shot but have you got plastic deposits causing an issue? Ordinary gun cleaning doesn't seem to clear them without some kind of solvent?

If your not familiar with the workings don't start stripping things down , take it to someone who is ! The Mossberg is a very easy to work on , wild guess it the chamber is rusting , fine wire wool soaked in a quality oil like the Browning spray wrapped around a suitable sized dowel. Always clean and oil a duck gun if you fired a shot or not ( especially one used in a boat ) Even stainless barrels can and will rust under this use !

I know how to break it down into its bigger parts. I would say extractors arent the issue since they strip the rims.

also those shells are stuck, stuck beyond pulling them out with pliers, i have to ram them out.

I am shooting Trust steel hawk high brass(not brass) but also tried B&P valle steel and Hull solway steel in it, same results.

So steel wool, my usual oil is unsalted tallow since i always have it on hand but i think i have some slip2000 left, red bottle.

think its worth lubing the chamber before heading out? or is that a bad idea like it is with rifles.

Cartridges stuck in chambers - walls of the chamber have rusted and pitted and cases are sticking into the pits.

And / or, you are now using duck cartridges with heavier loads which will give more force that will stick cartridges to the wall.

And/ or you are using a different brand of cartridge. Some are stickier than others.

Primary extraction power on a pump action is simply your strength of arms. There is no mechanical leverage like you have on a double, or the high pressure you get with a semi auto.

I would give the chamber a damn good clean. Don’t use steel wool. Much better is use plenty of light gun oil, let it soak and then use a proper bronze or nylon chamber brush to scrub out softened material.

Edit - seems that you have fixed it. On duck guns which are in the wet and salt, tallow mixed with a light oil is probably a bloody good protection. I use Rangoon oil, which is a light oil with a waxy / tallow base and light oil evaporates leaving a protective film.

What chamber specification and what cartridge specification? Is it close to the limit and then some fouling causes it to seize upon extraction?

brand new multiple brands. its absolutely the gun. only thing i can think off now after polishing it is that the oil might somehow be the problem. Its weird how it didnt do it until i went hunting. Only resl change has been that the gun is now constantly wet while in use, and coated in alot of oil everytime i come home.

The chamber needs more polishing. You had a result but it was short lived so you may need to polish it more.
Your tallow should work well as a preservative. I sometimes use it on my guns and it is fabulous.
I once had a shotgun that had a ringed chamber. That had bad extraction so check for that also.
