New Boots

Choice of boot very much depends on the ground you are stalking on. Stalking over rough hill country is very different to leafy woodlands in summer time. For mountain use I would go with a stiff 3/4 season boot, stiff enough to take a crampon - not that you will be using crampons very often (yes I have used them winter stalking when lots of hard frozen snow on the ground - make you very sure footed when dragging beasts of the hill, but too noisy for the actual stalking bit), but the stiffness is required to support your feet and ankles when on the steeper ground - I have a pair of Scarpa Manta's that are now 14 years old and have been resoled once. All our feet are different and different brands have different shapes.

Fow lowland farmland type use, in the summer time I use a trainer type walking shoe - light and quiet, or if the ground is wet an muddy, I use wellies.

Hi
I'm looking to get some new boots but dont want to spend a fortune anybody got any Idea's :-|

If you are only going for the odd stroll the buy cheapies but if you are doing some serious walking / stalking on wet hills and moorland spend some money , I have Lowa Combat GTX`s ,waterproof and supportive for ankles , they are very popular with Sqaddies and Bootnecks so that should tell you something, Altberg are also a well respected brand ,avoid anything made in China and anything without a Vibram sole.

Dully1963, I have a pair of Le Chameau mouflon plus, size 7 worn only once, your for £100:00 plus postage limited to £5:00p PM if you are interested

I'm sure Altberg are good for some people but certainly not for me , I listened to all the good reviews and spoke to them directly as I have wide feet. Despite this the boots were too narrow (Gamekeepers) even though I spoke to them about my foot width (I just have wide feet not mutant like!) . They told me they were limited to width by the soles they use.
I persevered with the boots and ended up with sore feet and ended up giving the things away..massive waste of money. Also the soles are a much too hard compound.
Meindl Dovres are wide enough and have a softer sole. Had them for 4 years now no probs.
