New Sporting Rifle tracking directory

Just my opinion from someone who has had two dealings with him (niether of them went very far). My overall judgement can be seen above ;).

Also BMHPup was scanning with her scope in a recent issue of Shooting Times, as well as not carring Binoculars (Now that is stirring :P) and surely they teach you not to do such naughty boohbooh's on your DSC1 course. :norty::stir:

Well, joshing aside, I hope that Selena/BMHpup continues to contribute to the forum and this thread in particular, as some interesting and constructive points have been raised, and I also hope she will take some of the concerns on board before pulling the trigger on publishing.

IMHO it's no bad thing to bring stalkers and handlers with trained dogs together but I'm seriously doubting the efficacy of such an uncontrolled listing that the magazine will not ultimately be taking any responsibility for.

As Bordersman said earlier, it's open to any Tom, Dick or Harry giving their dog a go at tracking wounded deer, no matter if it's had any training or not - even Selena has said she would be 'thrilled' to have the opportunity to use her young dog on a live trail. And I'm also not too sure that any stalker would be best pleased if an inexperienced dog and/or handler turned up for a bit of 'practice' in trying to locate a wounded animal that they were desperate to recover.

TBH I think the attitude comes across as a bit too casual and we owe the deer or any wounded game more respect than that. Just my opinion at the moment.

100% agreement. Its not something you want to happen, but if (and ultimatly when) it happens, you want the best tracking team you can get, not someone who sees it as a bit of a laugh and a fun little exercise - an attitude that, as Orion said, seems somehwat present atm. To put it in a different contex -would you want a traniee doctor performing your open heart surgery? To me its that serious, the humane dispatch of an animal post injury depends on you the tracker doing your job right.

For the record I dont have a tracking dog at the moment. Its simply not practical for me, Im going to college in september and that hardly fair on a pup, I have wanted one for many years, and when my studies are complete I intend to get a (probably two) Jamthund from a good norwegian freind of mine for hunting. I do have access to dogs should the worst come to it (and it did once).

Bmhpup, if Mr Carr gives you advice on how to train you pup please ignore it. After seeing his pathetic excuse at tracking a roe on the fieldsports channel he's the last person you should consult about training.

Sam , nice dogs those Jämthunds. A very handsome looking dog. They would not be my first choice for use as a tracking dog though. Great dogs if you want to hunt Moose, bear or boar.

Jagare,

I alwasy liked the look off them. I dont know much about them but I seem to remember reading somewhere that they locals call them "The Bear Dog" Because they are one of a few species that are un-afraid of said beast. Why do you deem the m unstuitable for tracking/follow up. Most of the people I have spoken to seem to hold them in very high regard for all hunting?

I would have thought it was down to the stalker doing his job right!! Yes mistakes happen but ultimately the responsibility lays with the stalker not the tracker that we would call upon.

Sam, i think the Jämthund is one of the best looking spitzer hunting dogs. They are great if you are going to hunt them. The thing about Jämthund,gråhund, laika etc are that they are pure hunting dogs. Whilst you can keep them in the house as part of the family, they are hunting machines and need to hunt to keep them happy. They are not a dog that will walk to heal with you while you stalk.
Here you may perhaps have a GWP, BMH as your tracking dog and a spitzer that you loose of when you want to bring the wounded animal, moose, bear, boar to bay.
Truth is they are to much dog just to use for tracking.

Sorry. I aggree whole-heartedly. Bad wording. What I mean is that in the situation of a wounded beast the tracker is the person who should (in my opinion) be the one in control, and take responsibility. After all, arent they the one who knows what they are doing?

Thanks Jagare,

I still think im going to buy one! But maybe a good excuse to have multiple dogs :D

I agree with Jagare about the Jämthund i hunted under them in sweden for moose and boar, incredible dogs but maybe to much dog for the UK maybe.

awesome dogs!!!!!!!

Also Bmhpup well done and good luck.

Oh dear! A young woman on the forum. Watch out that your inbox doesn't get full with all the PM's from the helpful guys on here.

Gentlemen,

Whether its a young woman or man, whether they are a professional or novice makes no difference, all are welcome on this site, and will be treated with the respect that we all expect from each other.

Thank you

Well, has our intrepid scribe disappeared?

After firstly somewhat surreptitiously getting a bit of free advertising in and then being uncloaked, she seems to have gone to earth!

The way this country is going I doubt I will be here for much longer :/ And I would love to live somwhere with Moose, boar and Bear. In fact my place of residence will probably be chosen on what I can hunt.

And as for Miss Mason? Maybe we scared her off

Hi there, Like you I read this yesterday and registered my services with them. The idea is great and I wish this was around when I first started out stalking many years ago. The fact that we can all pool our resources I think can only make this a better thing. Will also get you to meet (What I hope will be) some cracking people. Enjoy and I hope others will register.
