Night sight add on for a S&B scope

Hi all

I want to add some sort of night vision or thermal to my S&B 3x9x50 Scope to enable me shoot after dark. What are my options and which would you who have already taken this road recommend. Also what pit falls should i be aware of and avoid?

Thanks

I am currently using a Thermtec Hunt 650 Pro. It works really well on my Delta 1.5-9 x 45, I have also used it on my Amplus 2-15x56 but I don't get any benefit from the higher mag range as the image is less clear the more that you dial up. Once set-up, it gives a crisp, clear image - better than my mates Swaro.

My learning curve has been all about taking the time to identify any cover in the foreground that might be obscuring the shot and also taking the time on quartering shots. I would say thermal is ideal when shooting deer in open arable fields but it is hugely beneficial for shooting muntjac travelling through woodland understory as, once you've picked up the heat source with the monocular, you just keep on it with the scope until an opportunity presents itself.

EDIT - that above is from dawn/dusk experience not actual 'night' shooting but the principals would be the same.

I’ve got a pard 007 which I’ll use on my S&B precision hunter. It’s not perfect. The better quality glass doesn’t seem to like IR the spectrum. You’ll have days when you can’t see a thing and days it’s perfect, but that’s all NV really, it’s just quite extreme with the pard.

If you have flip up lense covers side mount them as otherwise the IR illuminator gets blocked out.

The on button, is incredibly delicate to the point I don’t put a battery in it until I intend to use it. The batteries are crap but you can buy a replacement better one from “Tourchy Boy” for about £8.
Don’t expect to be able to use the video function at all quickly I certainly never have.

In summary they work fine but arnt perfect. It’s definitely allowed me to take shots I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to take due to not enough light for the optic.

I have used Starlight Archer tubed rear add on nv for years and have tried it on lots of scope types, some of the things to consider would be:
  • Head position when switching from day to night use, inevitably you will lose your cheek weld if you have a rear add on
  • Requirement for either front or side parallax adjustment
  • Lens coatings on some top end scopes reduce light in the red part of the spectrum in favour of the blue (not ideal when you require IR as a source of illumination)
  • As mentioned by Rob E above mount your front flip up sideways or it will block your IR
  • Your IR is really important, that light has a long way to do, through numerous lenses before it reaches your eye.

As stated, without parallax, a rear add-on is problematic for focussing. I have a Cobra Blade Front add-on (tubed NV) with all shims etc here for £600 that will marry with that scope very nicely.

Has anyone heard of or used a Pulsar Krypton 2. It was advised to me by Pulsar at the Stalking show but i am not sure the Representative was giving me all the information needed to make a good decision

Why not go old school. For £100 you can really good small LED lamps that mount onto your scope that give a really good beam out to any shootable distance.
My thinking as well, some superb lights out there, when my C50 packs up I will be going old school, well not completely, thermal spotter as well

From advice and now limited experience your 3 base mag is ideal for a front thermal clip on, my own at 4 is maximum suitable as the menu is not always totally visible.

Any suggestions for lamps ??
Have a look at LED Lenser range. They are good quality. Not up to date on latest range. I have one that must be ten years old. Used it on occasion on a clamp that fits the scope. Good beam out to 250/ 300 yards.
