Night sights again......Pulsar N550, performance advice please.

I have no problems dedicating a rifle to N/V only, I now have a picatinny rail on a Blaser so I can swap scopes any time.
I just want to make sure that I buy something that I can use, not one of those gadgets that sit in the cupboard because they dont quite fit the bill or are to awkward to be practical.

Bear in mind if you are coming to The Deerstalking Fair in Kelso next month we will have a range of NV kit there to try.
As well as the latest Nite Site, Pulsar NV and Thermal Kit, we will have a new spec Longbow also should anyone want to try one (lighting conditions permitting)

Paul,
I'm curious why you need to shoot so far out. We have been using NV and with field craft have shot ALL our foxes out to no more than 40 yards.
If your spotting then I can understand, but if you use dedicated spotting NV kit and then use the kit on the rifle for the final act, then you'll be surprised just how close you can get. please see this thread;

i find the ns200 at 150yards useable range more than enough, ive had it a week now and ive shot 3 foxes and all 3 were shot under 80/90 yards, they havent got a clue your there, not like when using a lamp

i have had a new knee fitted after a rear end shunt due to a nob on his phone driveing into my car, so at this time i have to use my truck to shoot from so field craft is not a choice i have. i used to sit and call but now and for some time to come i'am unable to do so.
we don't like to shoot at any long range fox's as our land is a free range pig farm , but we do have the need to see as poachers.i
do not wish not to buy a scope just for one use ,i have this land for free and any outlay is to a cost to the two of us only and not the farmer, he wishes not to have dead pigs and we wish to keep him happy. i have a n550 and as good as it is i would like to have some thing around the same cost outlay that is more portable ,this is why i was intrested in the night sight it could be fitted to scope and then a mount fitted to a remote handle then the screen placed in truck i think.
Not every request for information is so one can shoot at long range and i agree with you comments i'v call'd fox within 10yds sitting still in full flood lite yard nr our piglet pens with wind etc and had them walk under my high seat. so no there is no need to shoot over 100/150 yrds i wait untill mr red is bent on comeing to pinch from us then he gets a hot one

To anyone starting out with night vision it really has become a problem. The market is changing so quickly, what do you do? When I got my first nv I thought it was marvellous, now I don't! My night vision set up that I use now is brilliant, but I bet it won't be too long before something supercedes it. If you get something that works now, use it and be happy! Get the best you can afford but try it out first.
As someone has said, you really don't need to be shooting foxes out to 200 yards, the whole purpose of decent night vision is stealth. Over the years I have kept a record of the distances foxes have been shot at and it always ends up around 100 yards average. Most half decent nv equipment will allow you to shoot a fox out to 150 yards.

The average of 100 yards may well true in your part of the world, but everybodies ground is different and this will affect how you go about things.
One the main areas we do the foxing on has very open fields which are often separated by very large dykes, often these can be 6'-10' wide, no caller I have yet seen will get a fox to cross one of these and the lack of cover gives no opportunity to stalk into them either, hence we have to take longer shots,I have never kept records but I would guess our average shot would be in the region of 180-200 yards some much further when conditions allow.
Good kit will allow you to take shots at longer range, my NV scope is zeroed at 235 yards and I feel confident on a fox at that range but when it's windy you can forget it.
As I said on a previous post I use an N750 with a doubler and Nightmaster 800IR which is currently mounted on a 20 Tac, I also have a PVS-14, mostly I use this as a spotter but I can use it as an add-on as well.
I much prefer using the N750 to using an add-on, performance wise with the IR on there is nothing in it but IR off the PVS is in a different league.
