Nissan X-Trail - How good or bad ?

I found this old thread, in light of the LR discussion, and thought to add that in the end I went for an XTrail. It was a 6 month old "demo" but only had 10 miles on the clock so it hadn't done much demonstrating. So far I have 1200 miles on it and am very pleased indeed with the performance on the road and off it. My off road driving isn't too challenging and it is still running on the standard tyres, though I do intend to change them for AT2s when I can source some inexpensive 16 inch alloys for it, anyone selling some? If I drive it very easy I can get 50mpg on a longish run! Over the last 300 or so miles the average was 45mpg so that is handy in view of the way fuel prices are going. So, all told I've been more impressed than I expected, here it is in action a few weeks back:

In a previous job I had a new 04 plate 2.2TD one as a company car [I'm a surveyor & got fed up of getting stuck on muddy building sites in the previously issued saloon cars we had], I found it very good with the understanding that it was not a Nissan Patrol for crossing deserts, but was superior to the Toyota Rav 4, Honda CRV or BMW X3 when you went off-road & pretty decent on road. Fuel economy was good & I liked the hard surfaced wipe-clean floor / boot area when the back seats were folded flat - very practical for muddy kit or leakages from a deer carcase.
Now there has been a model change to the new version you should be able to buy a late version [06/ 07] of the old model for a more reasonable price, although residual values do seem to hold up pretty well.

Regards, Tyke.

I think I will also look at one of these or a Patrol later in the year. I need a lot of space in my vehicles and have come to the conclusion that if I just use the money I get from selling my 06 Vito and have no finance I can take the 3mpg loss that a patrol has on my vito.
