NNY brass

Hi all,
I bought a couple of hundred once fired PPU brass from a lad. He works on an estate and they buy his factory ammo for him so he sells on the once fired brass.

I open the box to find quite a few Of the cases are stamped with nny.

Is this brass any good? Is it PPU stamped under another name???

Should I be getting narked off and asking for my money back?

As far as I know it's all the same brass. I can't tell the difference and my reloads group the same so don't worry.

I used to buy PPU just to shoot and get the brass! Absolutely nothing wrong with it...I have some 243 that’s on at least it’s 5th firing.

Only its 5th.........I have some 7 fired stuff about to be reloaded for its 8th. I am now looking at the cases closely and this is why I bought some more to replace my aging brass.

Hmmm. I have used PPU/NNY in 6.5 and 308 and usually by about third/fourth reload the primer pockets are loose/very loose and that is with moderate loads in each so be careful chaps.

I load PPU brass for four cartridges .308, .303, .243 & .223 and I've never managed to blow or enlarge a primer pocket.
As a matter of course I retire my brass after 6 firings, so if you're getting loose primer pockets after 4, I'd say the loads are either quite hot, or you're using a fast powder for the cartridge.

Neither of the above actually.

NNY is PPU and I've found it superb. Only reload it for .303 but always good. Most of my reloading is with GGG imperial brass but reload 000's of .303 and very rarely an issue even with many time reloaded.

What’s the inverted primer pick-up test? 🤔
Easypeasy and a good and fast sign of primer pocket stretch rather than feel it as you actually prime your brass - by which time your primer is in a duff or nearly duff case.
Put a new primer turned upside down (i.e. showing the face that the firing pin strikes or for the hard of thinking - shiny side up!) on your bench. Take your deprimed and resized brass and try to pick the primer up by gently pushing the case down onto it so that the primer tries to locate in the primer pocket. If the primer engages but only just enough in the primer pocket (i.e. it sits well proud of the case) to let you lift the case and engaged primer together it is an early indication of stretch but ok to reload. However if the entire primer or most of it fits easily into the hole the case is duff (technical expression) and should be binned. What you are hoping for ideally is a case that won’t let you lift the primer at all and is therefore good to reload until the next time - then repeat as an integral part of your reloading regime. Simples!
A good (i.e. bad) sign of primer pocket stretch is soot around the web sides and base (rather than the shoulders/neck). Repeated use of such rounds may also leave an obvious round pitted flash scar on the face of your bolt surrounding the firing pin port, not something you really want to see.
Stay safe my friend.

Only got a few PPU/NNY cases. The cases stamped PPU are 10 grains heavier than those stamped NNY.

Tip.
Ginex LR primers are at the upper end of the tolerances for LRs and can help you to use these cases a few more times. Said a bloke down the pub.

NNY is PPU in Cyrillic. Just be careful that they’re not Berdan primed! Other than that, no difference.
Back in 1982 a local shop had some #4 Enfields for $44 each and, if you bought the rifle, you could buy NNY stamped reloadable ammo for $2 a box. I bought a 6-Groove Savage and 5 boxes of ammo. I later bought quite a bit more of the "NNY" and the small print on the box indicated it was Privi Partizan. I only wanted it for the brass so I still have quite a bit of it left. The 100 cases I loaded my cast bullet comp loads in held up fine and are still in use.~Muir
