Not a Tikka...

Evening All,

I'm looking for my first dedicated stalking rifle in .308 and dont want to spend too much - absolute max £2,500 - but ideally less.

My two other rifles are Tikka's so i'm looking for something else. It's not going to be a workhorse rifle, probably only half dozen stalks a year and maybe a bit of target work in between. Any recommendations? Can be a bit left field.

Thanks

Matt

A flick through the classifieds throws up this one at the top of your budget.
It wouldn't be to my own taste, but looks interesting and good spec:

BIghorn actions are definitely a good direction to go. Controlled feed, mechanical eject, swappable bolt heads (if you decide you want a different casehead sized cartridge in the future), nitrided for rust protection...

That listing should be worth considering IMHO.

Just remember, the SR3 is cut for a traditional (internal) magazine/floor plate, not for AICS patterned mags (which obviously isn't usually preferred for a stalking rifle).

Does the 2500 o cause the scope, rings and moderator or just the rifle?

Lots of choices out there, howas are very good for the money.

What type of rifle are you into? More traditional sporting with wood and blue, stainless and plastic, chassis?

How do you generally shoot, static or stalking?

Majority of the time it will be woodland stalking off sticks with some highest work.

Was going to suggest Rössler (Roessler) Titan 6, but it seems that although Rössler lists CSW as distributor they don't have any info of Rössler in theis web page.

Definitely "left field", and good quality quite affordable switch-barrels.

Seems like it’s made for you

If you're keen on something different, CZ is probably worth a look, too; I tried the 600 Ergo and thought the handling was pretty fantastic. Sort of like the Sako S20, but at a better price and without the weight and feeding issues.

They have more-normal-looking options in their new rifle series as well.

CZ 600 would be nice but they took away the big selling point with cheap interchangable barrel , glued it stuck and a requirement for gunsmith instead. A Swedish gunmag tested an early production gun and the bolt fell apart then a cheap casted metal piece broke after 30-40 rounds, its probably fixed by now.

Just fits £50 under your budget, the complete package.

Ah, that’s unfortunate. I really do hope they’ve got it sorted; seemed like a very nice option to have and a lot of rifle for the money.

In my opinion, there's very little to choose from when starting out these days. Manufacturers seem to be intent on producing the cheapest rifles possible with the greatest profit margins. It's a depressing scene.

For what it's worth, I'd be tempted to explore either of these:

Or alternatively, a good clean stainless Howa. Although it seems there's still the odd new one about. I'd be happy enough with the Hogue but if you drop it into a Bell & Carlson, I believe you'd really be in business:

Ha, I will need to do some more digging, I'm not experienced to know much about the rifle or the maker!
