Only shoot roe when their head is up?

My neighbour is the leaseholder and before him his father so together they have 70 years on his lease, we were chatting generally and he mentioned that he never shoots roe when they are feeding, only when the head is up. He reckons the muscle group h/l shot reacts differently and head downs will run on much further.??????
Hello mate, well i think i heard an experienced swedish hunter once explain, that when their head is down/they're feeding, it pushes the diaphragm further fwds, and that changes things a bit in terms of the placement of the vitals vs how one is typically taught (as that is based on the deer having it's head up).

Now his advice was just to wait until the deer got its head back up before squeezing the trigger, but i am sure one can also adapt the shot placement as necessary, when understanding exactly how things change with the head down.

just went back to see what the swedish hunter said, and he said that when feeding the top of the front leg is pushed bckwards, so if one maintains a behind the front leg aim in those circurmstances one risks hitting too far back.

Been absolutely sweltering.

A mate in Wiltshire called in a buck yesterday, came in like a dog.

He said there were bucks chasing all over.

I keep on hearing about this hot weather, but I'm still puzzled as to its whereabouts 🤔
Cold, wet and windy here, as usual.
Currently 28c outside. Peaked at 31.3c today and 32.3c yesterday.
Dropping to 22c tomorrow which will be nice!!

Funnily enough I asked this question of Peter Green the UK’s leading deer vet two weeks ago and he said it was rubbish.
I was told it was advisable by an old FC Ranger in the 1980s.

22.250 KNOCKS THEM FLAT NO MATTER HOW THEYRE STANDING

Shot placement, energy, a good expanding bullet - all these will have more impact (sorry...) than head up /down will

I will not shoot roe head down. To do so without hitting the stomach means trashing both shoulders as the shoulder blades move rearwards and I plain don’t like it.

It’s surprising how loud you have to shout. Why I whisper to my dog ‘heel’ when it takes a full blooded bellow of ‘OI!’ to get a roe’s head up…..

Up or down makes no difference, they still fall over 👍
