Open Ticket Responsibilities

I was under the impression that although its not added to your certificate when you hold a closed licence you need to inform firearms of all new permissions and they will then contact you once they are happy for you to shoot on them. This is regardless of if its already been cleared by someone else. If anything that should technically speed the whole process up though as the shouldn't need to land visit due to already checked.
But mu understanding is you only can shoot on land they know you have written permission on. I think there are land permission sheet you can get to send in even. I could be completely wrong though.
Not at all, you have been given the entirely wrong end of the stick.

You don’t need to register land, you do need to satisfy yourself that it is cleared for the calibre you wish to shoot.

Absolutely not the case. It's fair to say that the only way you can be CERTAIN that a piece of land has been "deemed suitable by the chief, blah, blah, blah" is by asking the licencing dept, which in effect is telling them where you're shooting anyway. But let's say your friend/the landowner/gamekeeper/stalking guide, etc. has already checked the status of the land, and you trust them. Maybe they even have it in writing from the local licensing department. No need at all for you to the be asking/telling Licensing where you're shooting.

But what is the disadvantage of asking just to be sure. I’m of the opinion that they know a lot more about it than any of the experts on this forum. I really can’t see why the Origanal poster didn’t just do that and would have cleared it all up instantly.

Instantly in the case of my licensing department means an email which will get a response within a couple of weeks, or phoning them between the hours of 11am and noon on a weekday and waiting in the hold queue.

Unfortunately that excuse won’t hold up if you break the terms of your licence.
Even a week wait for a reply still must be worth checking. I can’t see why people seem so reluctant to speak to them.

Because in many cases it's totally unnecessary, and just clutters up their inbox and wastes their time, resulting in even longer delays over the things they should be dealing with, like grants, renewals and variations.
If the only way to find out if a piece of land is cleared is to ask them then fine, but it's equally likely that the landowner or a former (or joint) holder of the shooting rights will know.
There is certainly no need to inform your FLD of every bit of land you shoot over.

The OP wasn’t sure of what he needed to / should do so asked on a forum, it’s probably what 50% or more of threads on this forum are based around.

Nothing wrong with that and he probably got an answer quicker than hearing back from the FLD. There is also the fact that not every individual in every FLD will actually give the correct advice, some have funny ideas, like the example on another thread with someone from an FLD saying reloads have to be recorded on your certificate…..
