Optics advice.

This will do everything that you need and more. Exceptional scopes and I can't understand why no-one's snapped it up at that price over the last (nearly) 5 years!

However, you'll need to promise @Klenchblaize that you'll not rail mount it ;)

having read your post (many clearly didn't) for deer only and from highseats you will be hard pressed to beat an 8x56 from a quality german maker , nothing to fiddle with or get knocked all you will need to worry about when you shoot your first deer is putting the cross hair where you want the bullet to land , keep it simple because you will likely be excited at the time !

Agreed. Due to my location, I don't get to do as much stalking as most on here, but when I do, it's all woodland and highseats. I've had a Scmidt & Bender fixed 8x56 since day one, and its never let me down. Great at dusk and dawn, and I really struggle to think that another scope would be any better for my purposes. Yes, an illuminated reticle and extra mag for zero/load development/target fun would be nice, but its a big outlay.

Anyway, who am i kidding - of course I will spend £3k on a fancy scope in the near future, I'm amazed I've held out this long :)

One of the Vortex or Leupold would work just fine for a high seat unless you are planning to shoot past 200 yards and assuming that your eye sight is good. I am personally a fan of American scopes as I cannot bring myself to justify the price range for a Swaro or Zeiss.

Added advatage is the warranty offered by the American brands.

You'll find that a lot of big European brands (bar Swarovski, maybe...) will charge for any repairs or service to the scope, vastly increasing the risk of buying one secondhand.

I have bought and sold more scopes than I care to admit …
Uuugh, I know what you mean.🙄
On the other hand, you gain a lot of knowledge and experience by that and eventually REALLY know what you are talking about!

Answered your own question there. Because you can! A fixed 8x56 German/Austrian scope won't let you down 90% of the time but you have the money to not be caught out for the the last 10% so spend it 🤣

A 8x56 has the dimensions of an exhaust pipe. Not everybody‘s cup of tea.
If 8x mag is sufficient my current choice would be the Kahles 1.6-8x42. They had it in their portfolio about 10 years ago and then stopped it for no apparent reason. Now they have reintroduced it👍. Great little scope!

Would you post a pic of this spec please? I‘m not aware of ANY scope with 5mm per click neither at 100yrd nor m.
I have got 2x Zeiss 6-24 Diavari scopes with 0.5cm @ 100m (0.05 mil) clicks. Also got a Swarovski 6-24 that has 1/6moa which is close as s**t is to swearing the same. Both models no longer in production however 😢

To answer the OPs original question, based on his explanation that he’ll be woodland stalking or high seat to c.200m etc then a S&B 8x56 with a #7(?) reticle will be more than adequate - enough magnification for the longer shot, not too much magnification for closer range stuff & a reticle that gives a nice clearly defined cross in the centre but also has nice wide outer bars to ‘bracket’ with in lower light conditions.

They may use scaffold clamps on it if it will free-up space in the Optics Classifieds and get the Site Owners off by back!

Buy the best you can afford. Good glass is important an will last a lifetime, if looked after. Woodland stalking in the early morning or evening its important for your scope to gather as much light as possible. So go for a 50 or 56 aperature with good light collecting.

Couldn't agree more.

My Swarovski Z6i 3-18x50 has 5mm/100yd or 0.18"/100yd clicks

I would just like to thank everyone for taking the time to reply to my query.
You have given me some great advice but I think I just need to go and get my hands on some different scopes to see what suits me.
Luckily enough, the stalking show is on this weekend and is only a couple of hours away from me!
Thanks again folks 👍
