Oryx or Berserk Stock??

Hi All,

I have the chance of getting a Tikka T1X .22lr in either a GRS Berserk chassis or MDT Oryx chassis.
Having never used either chassis, asking about what would be the pros and cons about which one to choose?

Thanks

Id go MDT Oryx everyday.

I stuck 1 on my T3x 223 for my old man to use as a target rifle.

It's a really nice piece of kit

The Berserk is good and has good adjustability, my father in law has 1 on his Howa, but as a chassis the Oryx is just better.

To be honest I wouldn't call the Berserk a chassis, more a modernised stock.

The Oryx is a simple well thought out chassis at a great price point.

I have both. They are quite different from each other so I can understand your interest in other peoples opinions.
Ironically I have a T1X .22 in the Oryx but have T3X .204 (Krieger Barrelled) in the Berserk. The Oryx is nice to hold, well made - feels (and looks) like a quality item, it is a proper chassis so has loads of adjustment for comb height and you can adjust the length of pull with extra spacers which you have to purchase. There is a huge choice of MDT, M-Lok etc accessories to jazz it up as you wish. Only downsides for me are 1) Weight - its a heavy bit of kit, I use mine mainly for shooting practise so I don't mind too much because its as heavy as my Sauer 404 (and that is pretty heavy because its a rare one with a steel action instead of aluminium!) 2) It also has a very long fore-end, obviously useful for rail accessories etc but I didn't like the look of it with the short barrel because with mod screwed on it looked like there was no barrel! Mine therefore is paired with a 20" barrel which I think is more aesthetically pleasing. Going back to the weight and with the length of the whole bit of kit it really feels more like a centre fire the way I've set it up - which is fine for me as I said using it mainly for practise but I'm not sure I would like to lug it about after bunnies etc where you would probably want a lighter and more agile set up! The original stock is quite a lot 'smaller' and lighter and paired with a 16" barrel would be great for that I reckon.
The Berserk isn't so obviously a chassis but more of a custom stock (I know that's the same thing really!) It too has plenty of adjustment, even easier than the Oryx because you only have to press a button for both the comb and length of pull adjustment. It is made of a weatherproof reinforced glass fibre material which feels nice and solid with grippy panels around the pistol grip and fore-end where you would generally hold the rifle. The pistol grip is offset (canted!) to the right which makes the hold feel very natural and I do like that. (research done by GRS apparently shows this to be the case!) There isn't any where near the amount of accessories available for this 'chassis' if that's what floats your boat. My only real criticism of the stock is that the fore-end feels a bit too wide and looks a bit too chunky - obviously though you have to remember that the stock is made to fit many rifles and its only the inlet that generally changes. It too is quite heavy but doesn't feel too bad with this gun ( that's not a scientific judgement though !)
Both the Oryx and the Berserk are very well priced compared to other systems I think and both have manufactures with good pedigrees behind them so I think they are good value. Obviously the above is only my opinion and I think you would be pleased with either - hope my rather longer than intended musings help make the decision a little easier.

I have an Oryx for my CTR in 223, all of @sosa comments on the Oryx I totally agree with. I have access to and shoot regularly a t1x with the Berserk stock. Whilst mainly agreeing with sosa, I do’t feel the forend is too wide or chunky, it’s not lightweight but I’d happily carry out in the fields for a few hours. The pistol grip is very good.

Of course it all only opinions, try to handle rifles with both stocks if you can.

I bought a Howa 223 Varmint in a Berserk stock and it is now in an Oryx chassis.

If it was a sporter barrel and I was using it exclusively for carrying and hunting then I prefer the Berserk.

For anything range shooting, prone, highseat etc then the Oryx is by far a better choice. Also with the varmint barrel its a heavy rifle the Berserk didn't feel very balanced and was really front heavy. With the Oryx the overall weight is about the same but it handles much better.

The Oryx does lack features that more expensive MDT chassis offer but then it is entry level and for that it is very good.

Just throwing another one in the mix, have you considered the KRG Bravo? They appear to be cheaper than the MDT. I can't comment on either as I ended up with the XRS as I couldn't get hold of the bravo!

Just to add, the Oryx for the T1X is specific to that model rifle so can't be used with a Tikka T3 if you have one or decide to swap it or sell it at a later date but the Berserk uses a standard "bottom metal" so is compatible with other Tikka T3 models and aftermarket bottom metals.

Interesting, I did not know that, mine has the CTR “Bottom Metal”.

The Oryx only takes AI Mags so its not a concern usually but the T1X magazine fouls the Oryx magwell and magazine release, so an Oryx designed for a T1X doesnt have the magazine release and the magwell is a different shape.

You can use an Oryx meant for a T3/CTR with the T1X but you have to remove the mag release and then file/sand a small portion of the T1X magazine off the back so it fits in. It works but you do then have a large void where a much larger AI magazine should be.

Your, correct, brain fade, I am as you said using AI MAGS

have you considered the KRG Bravo

Whatever you decide, my advice would be to handle before committing to buy.

IIRC the only time I handled Bravo it felt slippery/plasticky and somewhat small. Looks much better in pictures. Same goes for Tikka UPR, it feels toyish and small when actually handling. I'm medium built.

Oryx is proper chassis, and GRS products I don't like (I find them conunterproductive for precision shooting, and in the past there were lots of quality problems).

I have the GRS on my howa and they are very comfortable and feel very custom, but I used my mates 6.5 with the oryx chassis and i found It to be alot better shooting position (I prefer pistol grips) on my wrist, the oryx does look alot better in person too in terms of quality.

As said above get your hands on both.
