Out last night.

I had a few hours of "Pig Farm Therapy".
Shot 92 Rolands with the pellet gun and Pard 007 combo. Mark, the owner, was pleased with the 52 I bagged on his home unit, then I popped into his outlying unit on the way home to top up the bag.
It's nice to get a few shots in and help him out, better than laying a lot of poison about the place.

Nice shooting BD.
The very thought of being near that number of rats gives me the willies!

Nice one - just starting to see the odd one turn up on a feeder or two - had a few hours the other night but only got 6 ! Most are in the covers and its the cold weather that brings them together so i can sort a few more out - wont be long now

Out last night for the rabbits. I soon found out we have a lot more than I expected. Using the Rimmy, & scope mounted red torch I discovered, rabbits dont like a red beam, a white would probably be better, it blinds & freezes them for longer,. Using the vantage .22 reticule is pointless when using a red beam, it is impossible to judge ranges past 75 yards. I needed more ammo than the ten shot mag holds. I can put on a Pulsar forward with covert beam, or bite the bullet & get a Zulu, which makes a deal of sense with a .22. But it is more expense just to shoot a few bunnies. BTW, I did manage 6 rabbits for 10 shots, So.. a reasonable total & a learning curve? Ill give the Pulsar a dust down, & report back.
Ps, Hares dont seem to take any notice of a red beam.

I've shot rabbits for 40 years and believe me red or amber filter produces much better results than white.

Nowadays I use the Alpex 4k which is in another league.

If you haven't got many rabbits to shoot stick with the lamp for cost , if not get an Alpex.

Thanks for that Nick. Makes sense. I'll try again tonight with the old Pulsar F455. It may have something to do with the moon, still giving off plenty of light, making the rabbits a bit more spooky.. Theres something nice about just using the light on the scope, less pffafing around & keeping it simple. Using a .22 is a joy, its so lightweight, a short T1x. Putting the pulsar on is like lugging a howitzer around. How do you get on with Hares & subs? 37 in one field. Stay tuned.

Have you tried one of the new small LEP torches?
Really impressive performance.

Hares and subs no problem at all. Best night ever was a place that was heaving with hares , we took the farmers old Defender and drove the whole farm as it was all grass pastures. Shot 56 hares with the .22lr and subs.

These days though I prefer my HMR , the .22 has become redundant recently.

Out tonight, one of my favourite spots, shot 3 rabbits when I noticed a heat source in the hedge, it didn't move so I scanned the stubble, a rat lying low 20yds away, 2 hares came wandering up the field, came to about25 yds away, was just about to pull the trigger on the first hare I would have shot in 30 years, when the rat sat up & became a small leveret, it then ran to its mum & started suckling. Turned my attention to the first heat source in time to see a roe coming up the headland, 20 yds away, the heat source came out & started suckling the doe. I gave up, walked to the next vantage point, 3 foxes sped down the field,1 stopped to a squeak but was too far for an accurate shot with the rimmy. It sat there a long time, so did I, a shooting star shot across the sky. I made a wish, I wished that I had the triple with me! Sometimes it makes you glad you didn't pull the trigger.

Well the gout has cleared so I went for a walk last night to my local permission. Bright moon and no wind coupled with not many rabbits on this farm , but I took the HMR anyway and thought if nothing else I will see what roe are about.

I counted 12 roe and watched a young buck frolicking about like a spring lamb.

No foxes seen but did manage more rabbits than I expected.

#56(think).

After not seeing anything I called at a farm to check for rats but didn't see any. The farm is covered in standing maize but just casually viewing a couple of rabbits in a small paddock a bloody fox pops out the hedge and tried to catch a rabbit!
I just about got everything turned on before Charles departed out the paddock, stoopid pard, it turns off after just half an hour from turning on, irrespective of when one comes out of standby! The clock doesn't restart.
Anyway...

At first I thought it was a cub but after the classic heart shot I had my doubts!
Turns out it was a large mature dog!

How far did it run Smelly ?

Well, More like "Out tonight really", Early Bath for a change & managed to do a bit of NocPix video, being as it's nice & easy on this unit, and a chap that is interested in getting one of these wanted a bit of vid, shame that humidity was measured at 85% so clarity is leaving a little to be desired, & the topped thistle crop is pretty deep too.
Fox carried the heart shot for a yard or two, I had allowed for a ten mile an hour crosswind from my right, just visible on reticle slightly right of target.

I thought I would take a hint from the cruising Buzzards looking down on the field that had been topped to get rid of the thistle crop.
