Mixed performance last night - low ground the visibility was excellent but up higher the air was very thick with moisture and temperatures had dropped to 4 degrees so glad I had dressed accordingly…
First field 500 yards from Chez FB - a pair in amongst the ewes, one came in nicely to the FB minimarvel and paid dearly for its curiosity…
The second one decided to get out of Dodge but for some strange reason (the caller?) changed it’s mind and came in a treat….
No - I don’t know how I missed it either but not exactly morale boosting…
This still shows the point at which the rifle fired - the bright crescent at the foot is the initiation of the round…

Suffice to say no matter how many times I replay the video it still was a miss…
Anyhow, I gathered up the first fox and was walking down the lane towards the car but stopped for a last sweep with the Pulsar and bugger me there was a fox in the field three hundred yards away. Quick drop of the corpse and a gazelle-like (aye right) trot back up the lane and I was able to get set up and on it very quickly. Pinged it at 166 and settled for the shot….
Not only a clean miss but I repeated it with a rushed second! Never has ol FB’s crest been so fallen….
Muttering darkly all the way back to the jeep I was very tempted to pack up and go home but reasoned that it’s always best to have a clean miss rather than a bad hit sooooo two clean misses (actually three but move on…) must really be a good thing….
Undaunted I drove to the hill farm some 10 minutes away - noticeably colder and thick air was more of a challenge for the Zulus but still able to see three hundred plus. Long walk to top of the hill and set the minicaller off again - nada… It was getting really cold and the wind was up so I gave it 5 minutes more before I was heading home.
As often happens right on the point of packing I saw a signature way off which was heading my way. Quick peep through the Zulus confirmed it as a fox with malice aforethought. Sure enough it came to perhaps two hundred but for reasons unknown did a right hand turn and started to mosey uphill….
Pinged it at 188 and tried the usual cacophony to bring it to a halt, with some success so shot taken and a dead fox resulted.
Number 46 on this small hill farm this year.
Funny old night - at my first (!) miss I did notice a much louder bang than usual but examination of the case showed nothing untoward - I wonder did I maybe hit a strand of wire too? Also noted for the first time that on poor visibility nights the LRF ping lights the fox up very well - better than the IR - see 20:48:20 on the last clip.
