Out last night.

Chucking it down this morning and only 1 degree above freezing plus a lazy wind. Right thinks I, off we go to look for a roe doe. Get out of the car and kitted up, walk 50 yards and think flipping heck how long must I enjoy myself for before I can go home! Anyway down to business, with the weather the way it was I thought there will be two does with followers, both twins 2 does plus a doe and a buck, in the far field beyond the strip wood. As it lightens they will drift back to the cover of the wood and I should get a shot. The best laid plans they say “gan aft aglay”. However today the plan came together exactly as I hoped! Shot a doe as they returned to the wood, could have dropped another but I am not under pressure for numbers and getting one back to an access point through fallen trees is enough for me. Back home by 9:00 with the doe account opened.

Well, I’ve not been out for weeks after a work injury and a operation so even though the weather was crap I’d reached the point where I could no longer stay in the house, so off to my mates farm in the cold and rain, went old school tonight with the .243 and lamp, last stop off of the night, caller out on hare death call and it was about 30 seconds before a fox came screaming into the caller, now I like to normally give a little whistle to stop them but I had to scream at this one. It finally stopped at about 40 yards and about 3 yards from the caller a very small vixen ( the picture makes it look bigger than it was) so I’m soaking wet, freezing 🥶 but it’s really nice to be back at it 👍IMG_3590.webp

Unusual one last night
On a farm where farmer was seeing foxes on calving camera coming into his calving sheds for the afterbirths
This was causing some of the cows to get a bit highly strung!
Set up in a corner or the field behind the shed and had 3 shot in the hour just after dark with nothing else seen for the next 2 hours….back home by 8pm!
Last fox was struck low in the chest and made the cover of a blackthorn covered drain IMG_1112.webp

Another not “Out last night” but rather this evening.
Christening of the Zulus V2 520 kindly sent my way by an old pal on the SD.
I have to say it is pretty impressive picture quality and the recording is very sharp too.
The fox howvervmight not be just so pleased….

You sneaky monkey, are they much better?

75 is in a spit of us - and we have been seeing the same massive increase in activity - checking records though we always do seem to as it gets colder the foxes come to the woods
I have shot a lot over the years and have never had one thats been "repaired" as far as i can remember
Do you get drop offs in your area ?

as jall55 says, I don't think so and have never heard of anything around here. Nothing has been patched up or looks anything other than a healthy, rural fox. And I rarely see more than one at a time - occasionally the odd pair but they are always pretty sharp and not like bumbling around all confused like dumped city foxes.

Is there an active hunt near?

Oh, very near! Saturday's meet is 200yds up the road. But completely trail hunting these days so they certainly aren't accounting for any. That said, there are lots of little game shoots about who are fairly active on their fox control. I'm far from the only one knocking them over around here.

I think maybe SD was maybe questioning whether any were "relocated" - a practice from days gone by i believe
The hunt up here is a target with the undesirables so i honestly doubt it - but you are more involved with that than me mate

Ah, sorry - misunderstood SD completely!

But you're right, they are not relocating them. They actively encourage the game shoot on their land to keep on top of them.
