Out last night.

These latest posts make me thankful for retirement, ........ I can do the all nighters now more often than when I was in collar, but I won't be out again before Wednesday eve, (5 reported very wet weather systems inbound).
I have blanked on the last two all nighters, so I must have knocked a pretty big hole in the population.

Roger that !, I am watching sunset times reversing around the dial, was just thinking about past years foxing with Mike,( flyboy 270) two each down before 8:45 & in the Greyhound with a pint of bitter.

Having seen nothing / Nada of anything fox like for several weeks, (Must have cleared them temporarily) ....... Last nights all nighter was an education ... for me, first fox appears on the unshootable bits & waltzes off into the misty distance, now barking is heard from the opposite direction, it is very still so it is carrying well, now I have to share my attention in two directions whilst also keeping up a sweep search for that one that comes & sits behind watching you from about 40 yards, first one reverses course & bumps into the barking one that is arriving at speed, I'm now wondering what is going on as it is well past mating or towing cubs around ... All is revealed as a territorial dispute takes place, looks like two very large cats going at it under your bedroom window @ 3am, they are still in a no shoot zone so I resign myself to a bystander role.
Never witnessed this activity before in many years of foxing.
Perhaps after clearing all the locals since acquiring this farm, fresh blood is fighting over it.:-|

Out yesterday evening, tried a new patch and nothing doing, possibly saw a couple of foxes but they were three fields away. I thought I heard a couple of barks, which would be early for mating but may have been mistaken.
Anyway, making my way around the new route to get back across a stream to the adjoining farm where I have had a lot of foxes and standing on the edge of the margin were three poachers with dogs. No torch beams but one of them looked to be using a thermal. I worked my way around until I was in direct sight but off to their side, they still hadn’t spotted me so I put the torch on them.
They pretty quickly disappeared and I couldn’t see them even with the thermal so decided to call it a night a couple of hours early and get back to the car before they found it. 🤬

I was out last night and while having a stand still for a few minutes I heard barking from behind me
I started to think id disturbed a munty but didn't sound right
I checked it with my thermal and low and behold a fox had come out of a patch of sweetcorn and making the noise
a nice safe shot and down it went (a vixen)
ive never had a fox call this time of year before,

Had a pair fighting this week, Cubs squabbling at a guess

got one on thermal stalking a patch of pheasants the other night missed them then went on after a few attempts caught one mid air before I shot him, it was quite the video.

Yes it is a minute long and cannot add guess too big, if you dm me you number I will WhatsApp to you, it is worth watching

Apart from not seeing any foxes and seeing three pikeys, I did spot a couple of badgers through the thermal less than 30yds away completely oblivious to my presence. They were totally relaxed and grooming each other, an absolute joy to watch what is a very elusive animal acting naturally in its native environment.
I recorded the encounter and did wonder if they might start to get jiggy, but don’t know what the badger seasons are.
Either way, watching the nighttime wildlife more than makes up for drawing a blank.

Badger culls when in force usually start around last week, to allow for cubs to be weaned off & grown.
