Out last night.

Out last night on a new permission too , not a breath of wind and quite bright. No foxes seen just plenty roe and hares.
So called it a night and had one last look on a small place near home.
After calling for a while and nothing about but rabbits decided it wasnt going to happen. Decided one last call ( Jack rabbit distress) which immediately had a fox trotting in to around 70 yds and dispatched using the Thermtec scope, 1st fox with this new scope 😁20240319_230448.webp

We waited on the duck and chicken thief’s’ mate for a while , but another no show . Same as Sunday evening. She’s maybe went to ground we’re thinking ? Anyway , onto the next permission and just as we pulled up at the end of the farm track around 10.00 p.m . , this hefty bugger sat up in the sparse , but knee high o.s.r. The .243 said goodnight Charlie at 213 yards . Sounds simple but it took at least 30 minutes to find it . And that was with a thermal spotter . Some of the rape wasn’t very sparse ! Heavy dog Fox that has been dining well on piglets lately .

I got a phonecall from a farmer friend I have known for years he said a guy was having trouble with deer on a field he had bought would I help him out. Contacted him and agreed to meet at the location. He was trying to start a nature reserve, he had spent a considerable amount of money, £thousands on planted trees, but deer had destroyed hundreds of pounds worth.

I looked but could not see deer slots or scatts so said I would come back after dark. He agreed I could shoot any animals if it would stop the damage even though he was a vegan.

Came back next night with a 17Hmr as I thought it was rabbits and not deer. 42 rabbits the first night and 55 rabbits the second night. All from a hedge down one side and across the top of the field. I will have to hammer them before the grass grows or I will not be able to see them.

97 in two nights is a fantasic number in my opinion. I did not see any Muntjac deer he thought was causing the damage.

We went out last night to help a mate out over a field of lambs, the two of us split up to cover two areas, I managed a single dog fox that came storming in to the foxpro on lamb in distress and the other gun had another two dog foxes where he was, just not seeing anyvixens at the minute .
A good night I recon given it was so bright and not a breath of wind.

Just after 8pm last night, My peripheral vision made me double take a very fast moving object, low down in a deep tractor rut, as it got about thirty feet away I could only give two ID's if I were asked ... Mink or Otter, It was going so fast it looked like it was in fear of it's life, travelling a full 360 around my position off into the distance & too much tail for Badger, way too fast too.😲

Saw something similar a couple of months back so I’ve placed a camera and bait. Got a very blurry photo a couple of weeks ago and I’m convinced it’s a mink. I’ve now set the camera for video in an attempt to rule out pine marten.
As soon as I get home in a couple of weeks I’ll be out looking for it, definitely can’t leave that marauding about the place.
