Out last night.

@alberta boy Not last night but this morning.
#23 & #24.
Just as the sun was rising and me in the shade I glassed a wooded bank.
Being the first bit of sun and no cold wind early this morning I knew one may just fancy a warm.
Well I was right, one appeared so I switched from small game loads to full house expecting a 100yd plus shot.
By the time I'd done that the fox had bedded down in the first rays of sun light.
I hoped over the fence, well err, staggered over it really, hopped, whom am I trying to kid!
I walked straight to it me being still in the shade some. If it looked my way it would be blinded by the sun at this stage.
At 40yds it heard my steps! It lifted it's head, I froze and it settled down again.
At this point I said to myself " don't you think you are close enough now...!"

The second one was a repeat.
Just 400yds away from the first I stalked the timber checking little sun spots and spotted the silver guard hairs of the back of a fox fast asleep.
I closed the gap to between 40-50 yards and this time loaded with the small game loads aimed the Leupold M8 3x.
On the shot it went into that fox thing, a seizure but I wasn't going to be fooled and ejected and shuttled another round in the chamber.
Glad I did for it recovered enough to flop down the gradient and come to rest head up, the second shot ended it instantly!

This scope albertaboy sent me is just the best thing ever 🙏.
Good times....

10.00p.m. Last night . After a wait of around a half hour , a lip squeak brought the chicken and duck thief’s mate charging in . It busted the pick up and headed behind and away from us , so a quick dive onto the muddy (very) muddy plough with .243 and it eventually stopped to the “Oi” at around 140 yards. Night night. Vixen heavy in cub so great result

This was one occasion (Couple weeks ago) when I remembered the "Foxy" button.
Complete miss from less than 50 yards!
Went back next morning with dog but nothing.

I shoot on a small farm and nearly always (Due to health mainly) shoot in the same field. Recently from the way Charlie is acting, when they appear I feel like I'm being sussed out nearly every time.
I'm not conspicuous but some (Not all) of them seem to look right at me when I'm thermaling.
Others definitely see the IR when the Zulus is fired up as they either change direction or leave quickly.
Sometimes I get lucky. 😉.
Thinking of giving the thermal sight a go, but really prefer NV for its versatility.
Anyone else have foxes spooked by ir?
Cheers, Ken.

Is it me or could that fox of watched to much of the sky at night?

Ken I have a fox I missed a couple of years ago that dodges any IR device I point at it!

Yep. The rare occasion I remember a certain button is often the time I miss. Obviously these don’t get posted, like anywhere!

PS
The sainted Lady FB has just suggested I put up a dedicated thread - “FB’s Greatest Misses” - don’t think she means herself….

Had a catch up chat with the farmer, who had recently turned his ewes and young ones out from the lambing barn. I thought I had put in a sterling effort in clearing six (he agreed - haha) but he added that he had knocked over a further three with his 17. so nine cleared in total. The lambs certainly seem to have drawn them in from all around.
On another perm this week, which sits atop a great big hill with amazing views. I stood scanning the surrounding fields and said view through the telos; and suddenly the most frantic scrabbling virtually at my feet! for the first time in years my heart was in my mouth for a moment - sh@t a brick! span round with the thermal just in time to see the arse end of a fox bolt away round the corner of the hedge. I scuttled after him but he had vanished. Seemed to have half his tail missing?
Once I had 'collected my thoughts' and let the pulse settle, I stood off the spot by a good distance and waited. And waited some more. Sure enough maybe thirty minutes later a fox appears scenting along the track, dropped it tidily with a side on chest shot.
Not old half tail though, this was certainly another. Gave it another hour but nothing else showed. Back there again when I get chance.
