Out last night.

Lambing has started so nipped out for an hour, halfway to farm it started drizzling…..
Sat in the Jimny for 10 mins hoping it would go off, it didn’t, gave it another 10 mins then thought sod it, it’s only rain. Set everything up and had a (not) dry run with the Axion and the Zulus - pleasantly surprised by what I could see through each. Walked the 3/4 mile to top of lane and started with the FB special - a signature appeared maybe 500 off but only peeped through one hedge before it winded me then off it went…
Back down to farm, crossed road and walked in to the first lambing field and started with the mini caller but only interest was from 2/3 day old lambs which could have passed for rabbits! Then as calmly as you like a heat signature came moseying up the inside of the hedge - 250 off and almost straight downwind of me - bugger! Tried to get it in view with the Zulus but it clearly winded me and disappeared behind a dip along the hedge and that I though was that…

Switched to mouth squeak and a signature came through the hedge but again busted me and took off - fast!

Well I did say it was fast….
Fortunately for me and defo not for it, the escape route was my side of the hedge. A series of demented quacks, whoops and a few not so muttered curses and blow me if the rascal didn’t stop and turn side on - the wummmphh confirmed what I saw through the Zulus -

A few minutes later I looked down on a big dog fox which clearly had lamb on it’s mind.

Love the Axion and the Zulus - brilliant combination, a perfect match for the sainted triple deuce….

Aye that moons certainly bright , just in been out since 7pm never saw a fox just loads of Roe and hares.

#7 for me.
Another attic window jobbie.
It's been coming in on the Muntjac carcasses over the last week, very morning when the frost was on the ground you could see a great frost-free patch where it had been lying having a gnaw on the frozen carcass, I've stayed up a few nights until gone midnight and seen it the far distance, even tried giving it a call last night.. I gave up at 12,30 last night and went to bed, woke up at 4am for a pee and had a look with the thermal... trotting across the turnip field was Freddy, straight onto the bait... :fox:💥...

Complete amateur hour for me last night!!

Turned up at a new spot. Fox trotting across the first field as I was stood out in the open in bright moonlight. Didn’t even try to move onto the sticks.

Let it mooch off then placed the caller and wandered over to the hedge. Wasn’t happy with where I left the caller so decided to move it. Put the rifle down, went 30yds to get caller, quick scan with thermal… fox happily trotting back across the field about 50yds away. 😡😡

Let that debacle settle then placed the caller in the next field and retreated to the best cover I could find with the bright moonlight. Called on and off for and hour or so, went for a bit of a wander etc and not a thing.

Gave it one last try with vixen mating call and something appeared in the gateway by the caller - sure it was a fox but by the time I got the rifle on it it had gone.

Gave it 10mins then wandered back to truck, collecting caller, clashing sticks and gates on my way 🙈🙈 Final scan of the hedgerow below the caller on my way and blow me, something that looked a bit like a curled up, sleeping fox. Probably 40yds from where the caller had been and 100yds from my current position. Just couldn’t make it out in the scope - no identifying features, just blending in with the thick rushes around it.

Anyway, I was so unconvinced anything could still be out that more clashing of sticks, quick squeak with the caller, moved out into the open to get a better view - nothing!

Maybe a sheep in the hedge bottom after all.

Finally got into a position I could get clear line of sight with the scope after about 10 mins dicking about. Definitely something there!

“OI!!”

Bloody fox lifted its head!! How it sat tight through all of that I will never know!!

Turns out it was a lovely vixen, she never even got a chance to munch on the new Muntjac I picked up off the road yesterday.
Long Tail...

first field I checked vixen down. Driving across the next field school boy error ended up stuck 🙄. Waited on farmer coming to pull me out and as was heading out field spotted another fox. Another vixen down. Getting stuck didn't seem so bad now🤣. Out again the next morning for a look about another vixen down
Tried uploading videos but not letting me🤷

Thats second post I've read today about shooters getting the truck stuck & needing farmer. Does he not say anything about you churning up fields driving on them this wet?

I'd be fair pïssed if I had to get tractor involved to pull someone out of their own mess from doing their hobby.

And after dark when most of the duties have been completed for the day.

Was a stubble park so no damage done. It wasn't something that was planned and was just after dark so not late . Farmer is a good friend and was more than happy that had got couple foxes as he had been having bother . First time had been stuck in a few years so doing no to bad

Bugger....
Missed one twice at 222 yards with the 222.
Blast.
I moved into three barking fox's but could only see the one. Using the shadows I got down to 222 yards and although the Zulus struggled in the mist the shot felt good but no report of contact returned. Next he was stood up from his snooze looking confused.
Shot #2 was sent but again no favourable report came back. 😞
After a while the fox reappeared further away after retreating to the wood he emerged from originally and looked unscathed.
Guess who will be checking a rifle soon....!
