Out last night.

Ventured out for the first night-time shooting in a while - I normally give the foxes a break when cubs are dependent on parents, also means there are more about this time of year.
Funny old night, thick cloud but bright and very warm. The air was “thick” so I figured the Axion might struggle a bit but first sweep at far-off cattle was very reassuring. Half an hour of fruitless calling later I walked back to the Jimny and across the road was a fox watching me from a hedgerow. Not on my ground so we watched each other for a while then he tipped his hat and was gone. Bugger!
Next “port of call” was the clifftop fields about a mile over the hill where the backstop is two hundred foot cliffs and the Irish Sea; I thought the air was thick where I had started out but the sea was adding air-borne droplets which almost felt like rain - Irish Mist?
Anyhoo first field sweep and before even calling, the thermal revealed a fox poking through the long grass. A couple of mouth squeaks and in it came for a fairly straightforward chest-on shot.

Turned out to be a well developed cub. By the light of my phone this little smasher did give me some pangs of regret but it was in sheep central so had to join the many forebears I have shot in these fields.
The far end of that field drops down to the clifftop field and right over near the hedgerow a heat signature was obvious on my first sweep. However the air was so water-filled that the sight picture through the Zulus was very affected but fortunately clear enough to permit a shot at a fox which was eating something then quickly.. err…. evidently making space for more. Pinged at 170, steadied(ish) the nerves and took the shot, heard the strike and saw the fox go over then quickly get to its feet and run with “tail up” - usually a good sign. Sure enough it lay 25 yards away, hit slightly high but the 50gns Vmax had done the job as usual.

As before a moment or two to admire the beauty of these creatures, another little pang of regret (obviously gets worse with age) then home.

Managed 85 crows on Sat morning then headed back to the same farm Monday night for a look.

Pulled into the yard and as I parked up I saw some likely eye shine from down the field. Got my kit and headed off in pursuit...but forgot my sticks. Bloody grass was to tall for a prone shot so a bit of buggering about and managed a shot off a fence post.

Decent size dog fox.

Had a wander back to the truck to get the sticks, off to the other side of the farm. Saw another fox but it was to close to the road for a shot. Headed back to the start point and spotted a fox in a big silage field. After 30 mins got a shot on him at around 100 yards.

Nos 25 & 26

I decided it actually really helps me to not enjoy myself so I carried on and sobbed quietly to myself 😅 😛

I put the whirly out again.....bloody jackdaws loved it...and near enough landed on top of it....great fun (oops I mean a crap day)

Not been out for a few weeks due to work and various family commitments. Lost a chicken over the weekend though and a fox showed up on the camera last night for the first time in months so it's time to get that squeaky bedroom window oiled and a bit of bait chucked out in front of the trailcam!

You must love shooting a fox.....pick them up with one hand and throw them in some deep cover out of the way....no quad needed  👍

220 paces.
It busted me and ran into long grass but I stayed calm and didn't snatch this time.
Shot was centered just nice.
The bait had worked. I'm sure this is the one I missed. Exactly the same area and no others seen until tonight.
Jessy was soon on its trail and found it for me in the long grass.

We call that a "hedge ticket" went out a couple of nights ago with 4 dotted on one block and being down wind was not a good idea!

Good intel from different ends of the county, some out at deer o'clock some not!

Sat out for a non appearing fox after an afternoon of jagdhorn playing at a hunters funeral here. Then I heard a rustle nearby and three pine martens ran past under my high seat and proceeded to play 30 yards away running up and down a specific tree watched it all on the thermal, no idea why it was just the one tree. Nice moment though.
I had a flat for sale on a 2 day on line auction in Kent as I have had it for sale for 2.5 years and even on the site it went unsold at 5pm yesterday so I was a bit down but the martens cheered me up again.

First time out in a while last night but they have started cutting the crops so thought I would give it a go, I seen a fox mousing at around 300yds in a fresh cut field so I gave a few squeaks on the back of my hand and It came racing in to me, I had to shout out to get it to stop before it ran past me, Turned out to be a small adult dog.

Just had feedback from the funeral yesterday. Makes me feel good.
Nochmals VIELEN DANK

In English.
Please forward this message to the band:
Johann Lang's relatives expressed their "sacred" thanks to the hunters and the brass players yesterday. The hunting horn players added a special touch to the funeral, and many had goosebumps and tears in their eyes (including me).
THANK YOU AGAIN

Put the pheasants in the pens yesterday morning. All went well. Went for a wander last night, haven’t seen a fox for about a month, but now there’s a load of little dinner bells in the woods, spotted this vixen making it way towards the poults. Quick squeak and she charged towards me and had 55gn vmax for dinner instead of pheasant!.

Out last night and saw 3 foxes I think. One in a silage field that kept disappearing momentarily and then completely. Two messing about among the cows. Then one of these headed towards the farm. On it at 140 yards but not safe enough shot so moved up the hedge line. It spotted us and headed across the field then stopped at 186 paces. 49g v-max did the job again. Dog cub, number 18.IMG_1984.webp

Shot two in a problem area the other night - very pretty cubs. Thought about it a bit, reflected on it a lot, then decided to put the .222 away for a month or two…
