Out last night.

Out last night on a couple of farms before lambing
On the drive down,I rang a friend I hadn’t been talking to for a while which led to a prolonged chat after I’d pulled in at the first port of call
Anyway, while we were on the phone I said “lad you won’t believe this, but there’s a fox after coming out of the wood in front of the jeep and gone up the road to a run I know goes into the field behind me!”
I told him to stay on the line and say nothing while I popped the phone into my jacket and got the rifle out of the sleeve then out into the crush pen
She was 120 yards up the field and job done
Then I hear from my pocket “I could hear the thump from here” 😂
An old vixen, one of 3 for the night before rain rolled in
Well worn set of teeth on her.

A miss last week had me a bit pi##ed off. The lousy weather had delayed a zero check until a clearance yesterday. Anyway got the zero sorted , yes, it was out of sorts. A couple of bait pipes had been touched the night before and I had replenished them with the remains of some butchered sika.
At 730 I setup shop overlooking both bait pipes. They’re on different fences giving me shots of 120-140 yards. I had intended on just staying an hour and as 830 approached was a bit disappointed. But was not to be ! A hot shape came working its way along a ditch and then continued on without coming in range. Ten minutes later it returned and presented a shot. First time using Berger 52gr varmint hollow points, no exit hole !IMG_4909.webp

How is the sight mark wraith. I liked mine, until it started shifting zero!

Cabin fever means I'm off in a bit to shoot a few rats on the pig units.
The Gator is still being repaired, and the rain has made it difficult to get around without it, so no foxing until it's back.

Ah well, I had a good evening on the rats, shot 152, maybe a couple more. Mark, the owner of the pig units, was pleased to see me. He thrust a bottle of Scotch into my hands as a thanks... It's difficult to refuse 😇
I love my FX Crown for this job. It's accurate, with a good punch when running at maximum with a decent Diablo pellet. You can flatten 'em from all angles; even the Texas heart shot drains the life from 'em instantly.

Awesome tally, have only ever had a third of that in a session.

I love ratting, and I'm fortunate to have these two units to visit, although a pal who is a professional pest controller thinks I'm bonkers for doing it for nothing.
I had three consecutive sessions a couple of years ago when I got over 300 on each visit. They were long sessions, mind, packed up shooting at 1am on all three trips.
It's all good fun :norty:

I went out Sunday as it was the only dry day in a while for a fox or two that I knew was about.

Did not see a fox but a fallow doe came into the field so dropped her. when I went back to the car to get a rope to drag her back, then along came a muntjac buck, he walked right past me 20 yds away so picked up my rifle and dropped him on the spot so then my work started but at least I was out and it was dry.

Just come back in. It's like a swamp on my sheep perm. No fox seen just rabbits and hares and a few more big rats to cull.
Started to rain at 10.30pm so called it a night

D

4 tonight, should of been 5 but the first of the night was a miss 😳 thats the first for a while and it was the most straightforward! Complacency me thinks and a wee bit of haste! Even though 4 more were shot cleanly afterwards, I still will be checking zero Monday... its a head game with myself 👀😅
