TELLY Springwatch host Chris Packham has shocked cancer patients by declaring research cash should be diverted to wildlife instead.
The BBC naturalist says in the latest Radio Times: “We need to stop chasing cures for cancer and things like that and start realising the health of the planet goes beyond the health of human beings.”
Packham, 53, adds: “There are a lot of wealthy people in the UK who, in the past, would give to things such as medicine and education, but because of the pressure on the environment they’re now thinking of using their excess wealth to protect wildlife.”
Cancer Research UK blasted his plea — which comes after the controversial presenter said giant pandas should be allowed to die out.
The charity’s Sara Osborne said donations were vital. She added: “More than 300,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year but thanks to research into life-saving treatments and cures, 50 per cent now survive for at least ten years.”

The man is a disgrace in my opinion. Like many we have been touched by the terrible disease cancer, it takes lives young and old, wealthy or not, his comments are a total insult to all those who have passed on and lost the fight, or are living with cancer and trying to win the fight.

I only hope is that cancer does not visit him or his nearest and dearest. What would he put on a young child's life laying in a hospital bed dying from cancer?

The man is an idiot. If anything the cancer research needs more money. My nephew died in Feb from brain cancer, the money raised by family and friends is quite considerable but nowhere near enough. Research is very expensive, the more money put into research the quicker we might be able to defeat this horrible disease.

Had he said we need a very gradual (to avoid too much economic hardship) reduction in the world population of humans in order to give the world's flora and fauna more space and a chance to reverse its decline I am sure almost everyone would agree (obviously not politicians as they have spent the tax income for the next 5 generations already so are desperate for more tax payers).

I do quite a bit of work at St George's hospital in London, it specialises in child cancers and to see them little people who are just starting off in life with this terrible illness is not funny..... I was in a lift with a wee lad and parents he was a happy chappie full of life but terminal..... how can this mug get away with his ***** like he does. As a BBC employee he's meant to be impartial ???? This nob ed is so far removed from impartiality it pi$$es me off that I pay the tw@ts wages.... rant over. I'm getting to that point myself to be honest! I mostly use Netflix, LoveFilm, Blinkbox and so on... And I cant get terrestrial TV in my area at all - Its Sky only. So I'm paying the TV licence and Sky costs to watch about 20 minutes of drivel a month. And wally's like Packham dont make me any more inclined to stump up! The mans a disgrace. Lefty, anti, trying-to-be-trendy b*ll-end.

I lost two of my grandparents to cancer so comments like that make my blood boil!

I agree in one way that people should not give to cancer charities because they should not have to .The Government should provide all the necessary funds to find a cure for that and other illnesses .Drugs companies who make Billions out of treatment for illness should be also forced to contribute to research,I know there is no chance as apparently there is a saying in drugs companies that "CURES KILL PROFITS"Makes you wonder how they sleep at night ?

What really worries me is that we have a depressed individual with easy access to a major media outlet. The last time that happened the depressive was sitting on a sofa advising our Prime Minister and look how well that all turned out!
