Wanted: Peak District contacts

Bit of a random one, but moving to Sheffield in the next couple of weeks and looking for some picking up contacts in the Peak District

I’m happy to make a few calls and introduce myself to keepers etc but just looking for names of shoots or places to start as it’s not an area I have any shooting contacts.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been picking up for years, from small farm shoots through to some big estates in the south of England. I’ve got my own pick up and currently running 2 labs and a springer.

Quite a few options around, grouse moors, plenty of pheasant shoots about, what area of Sheffield roughly?

I was mulling this over last night, and I’m really conscious that there are lots of folk asking for favours and where to find ground etc on this site, but not that many give anything back.

So if anyone does help me find a spot of decent picking up on a nice estate then I’ll make sure they get a stalk out of it on me. Can’t promise where yet and it’ll be on the hinds / does but I thought it only fair to repay the favour. I appreciate “decent picking up and nice estate“ are subjective but I’m looking for well organised, nice ground, decent sized shoot etc. We’ll figure something out!

Local gunshop/farm and country store is usually a good port of call.

The good old hand-written message on a real notice board may work better than a virtual one.

All the best and good luck.

I live in the Peak too and I have to say that whilst it's not exactly a desert, neither is it a shooting paradise. There are a fair few good clay shoots that run regulalry so it's perhaps worth tapping people up at some of those if you can get the conversation running. There are shoots out on the Woodhead bypass, Fox House above Hathersage, one out by Buxton on the Goyt Valley road, one at Press near Clay Cross - that spring to mind immediately. Not a rough shooter myself so I can't help with anything directly. As for stalking, there are a growing number of deer. Escapees (which no one seems to want to admit to) but I'll be darned if I can get anyone to own up to having the rights. There are red and fallow within 5 miles of my house but it's all very secret. Munties have been seen in the village, but better not to mention pies as it will upset the nature lovers I fear. Gunshops on your side of the hill are a bit sparse now. There used to be many many more but they've gone. There is one in Whaley Bridge which I've never been into. Looks quite traditional and isn't that far to go from your neck of the woods.

PM inbound

I studied in Sheffield and while there didn't do any beating / picking up, but can recommend the gunshop on Ecclesall road (Hardy's Gunsmiths). Really friendly in there and seemed to know local shoots and estates - so would recommend going in there.

Hope you enjoy the move - I absolutely loved living in Sheffield, and would move back in a heartbeat.

pm me , or dm me, whatever the term is. I don’t do much driven shooting these days but have contacts on a couple of shoots at Chatsworth ( close by) and catton hall ( further away but not too far) and can point you at some people who might be able to help.

Yes real nice chap is John

Moved down the road a bit now though

Depending on which side of Sheffield you are living, Lincolnshire is not too far from the east side of town. Much better chance of getting some there. Some nice estates in North Notts which are only 20 mins from Sheffield but very difficult to get on.

Your best bet would be to join the beating line. Then the keeper sees you and your dogs worth. There’s shoots all around you that at times are screaming for beaters on grouse and pheasants. Woodhead, Snailsden, flouch etc....
