I do apologise if this has been done before, but we all have differing ideas as to how to look after your dogs teeth.

So, what do you guys do. I want to look after my young dogs teeth, but must confess I have never cleaned a dogs teeth, more relying on food and chews.

Thoughts please gents.

Cheers.

Mike.

My old dogs teeth/breath weren’t great, high levels of plaque until I changed him to a raw diet, I feed mostly chicken carcasses topped up with venison trim a bones, it has worked wonders for his oral health.

I used to trim off every scrap of meat I could recover from a deer carcass. Now bones, fiddly bits, rib cage, neck, lower leg go to the dog, two or three times a week, suspended in the run. They love getting to the marrow. Working through bones to the marrow does wonders for keeping dogs teeth in good condition.

Honestly the best thing you can do (if you can be bothered) is to brush their teeth. Start off with some meaty toothpaste on your finger for a week or two, then start using a fingerbrush, before eventually moving up to a kiddies toothbrush after a few weeks. It takes time to get them used to it, but once they are its just part of the daily routine. That said - I haven't taken my own advice and just give mine a chew every now and again.

Take the tartar off the older dog with dental picks, vet quoted £350 to do it! Plus most of above.

The best way to look after dogs teeth is to have the best diet for it. This means chewy foods like bones, raw hide, chews, tripe etc etc and to have it daily. If you feed your dog soggy/ wet food then it will stick to their teeth and contribute to tartar build up. Best to feed this type of food dry or immediately wet so its still crunchy.
My personal opinion is that tooth brushing dogs is a chore and not really necessary if you feed an appropriate diet.
Like i said soft wet diet is the worst for it.

Best way? 6 monthly scale and polish at your vets!

Dry food and brushing. Hide chews good. Raw is fine if you know the provenenace. So I wouldn't feed raw chicken carcasses as the contamination is too great. Yor own venison is probably OK.

I know some will criticise but I give antlers to mine, they chew on them for hours. Tempting fate now but not had a broken tooth yet!

Bones

If you don’t have Deer carcass bones to give em ... go to local butchers and buy bones for em... some butchers still give em away .

I put dogs into their kennel with theirs

As I found that if my two are going to fight it will be over an old bone

Once bones looking decidly “ done” I bin it , won’t leave it lying for them to fight over later .

Once or twice a week teeth clean as .

As ileso said bones now and again,my vet tells everyone to give the dog bones to chew on. It's a natural thing for them to do.
