Pest control on Spring Barley, got the yellow net out...

This block of Spring Barley has been plagued with Rye grass so they have patch sprayed it as best they can, however as it goes over so does the barley it is smothering. The farmer who I have known all my life also do quite a lot of repairs in the year.
Laid Barley/Wheat is renowned for a poor pick up as you can't run the dogs as they will be in the vets the next day, with that in mind I found a bare patch and did my best to drop them there. The farmer is left handed also shoots a Browning with both guns having a left cast and are as close as you can get lop. I rang him lunch time "hotting up come down for a go" I was on 60 when he turned up so he was straight into the action shooting very well. It is easier with someone calling the birds Tim lol

Swapping places at 90 he was calling them for me...at 99 I said come on shoot the hundreth.. ending up on 106 in 3 1/2 hrs of shooting time. He has joined me on a few big days as I have taken his son on them with 340 being the biggest bag.

Well done fella - good to see the stakeout paid off. 👍

Better to spend 3 hours in the right place than 6 hour in the wrong. Wise words 👍

Ta Russ, I was at the other end when chatting to you before starting, but remembered the times chatting to PT saying"draw them up the wind"
So with the West wind it worked well.
Nice MJ btw.

When my son was younger I used to employ him to retrieve pigeons from crops 👍🏻 plus I’ve never managed to train a lab to start plucking the birds at the quiet times

Did you go on your barley?
I did Tim
and to embarrassed to post , they just weren’t there 3 hours 3 birds
but hay ho , still great the be out
it’s amazing how much wildlife is around you when you just sit still and have a good look around

I went out a few days ago on 200 plus acres of the laid barley. It had not been shot before. Reconitered the field the day before. Loads and loads of pigeon there. Nice stiff breeze. Thought I was on for at least a Century. Not one of them showed any interest in the decoys. Ended up with 47 from the flight line. I am totally perplexed. I cannot think of the reason why they did not decoy.

They soon switch off when it goes hard as the milky stuff is what they like...

You and me both , it’s a funny creature some days come In grand , and some days when you know your set up right and they won’t play
they really can be a challenge, looks like Tim got it right tho

I had two good teachers, my dear old Dad for shooting also quite a lot of time out with Peter Theobold gives you a fair chance as we have shot toe to toe on some big days....

To make a good bag you need a lot of birds, good timing don't take on the 50 yds stuff till late in the day, not to much choke, spend a bit of time watching as it is no good being where the birds are not.
This day a good while ago took me 4 trips of 300 one way up a steep hill the previous afternoon then the gun rounds food drink. then shoot pick up 90 2 trips to get them back then the kit...
But being up on that hill shooting well was worth it.
It is a simple formula.

I love pigeon shooting. On Saturday they mainly wanted the wrong end of the field which was annoying.
They were decoy shy as well then the odd one would come in like a kamikaze.
That’s the beauty of pigeon shooting, never really knowing what they’ll do
