Pest Control question?

Just a quick question for any of the registered pest control guys amongst us. WE have had a rat problem around the small housing estate where I live in the past. It was reported and the Housing Association got a pest control company in (I can't remember the name of the company) and they set out some "Rat feeding Stations"! The rat problem seemed to get solved and no rats were seen for ages. However just over a few weeks ago they had to get a company in to remove the loft insulation and replace it a few of the properties as it was infected with rat droppings. I have just been out the front for a smoke on my pipe and saw a very large rat trotting about our front garden - Unfortunately I could not get our dog out in time to get it so I am wondering if we still have a bit of a rat problem and that it might be worse than was thought.
With that in mind my question is - I have not seen the "Pest Control Operative" come round to top up any of the rat feeding stations since longer than I can remember so is there any "legal" set time limit/frequency that they have to come round regularly to check and top up the Bait stations please as I would like the "problem" dealt with as quickly as possible??

No "legal" time limit as you would have with live capture traps, more of a case of what they are paid to do probably.

Suggest a quick call to the housing association that you are seeing rats and hopefully they will get them dealt with.

Hello, I agree with Mike, get back onto your Housing Association ASAP , I presume the Rat feeding boxes had poison ? I thought these had to be checked like live traps ??

Sounds like the "pest controllers" where just poison spreaders. Quite likely this will re-occur over and over again , unless someone finds out where the rats are coming from and fixes that ! Suspect would be sewers or drainage , if rats are upstairs then they have found their way into the Cavity ( broken or blockages in drains and septic tanks the main issues )

Thanks Mike, Flash and Bowland Blades! I have just tried phoning our "Housing Manageress" and left a message for her! They are simple "enclosed" bait boxes but I do not know what type of "bait" has been used!
The last thing I want is for our dog to get out and cause chaos trying to sort out the filthy things - And I know he would love to and is more than capable of doing the job but we (And all of our neighbours would have plant pots and flowers etc spread all over the place!

My understanding, from doing the Lantra course to be able to buy poison, you are supposed to monitor the bait consumption, if it isn't being eaten it should be removed and replaced with plain wheat and monitor that.

If you use poison 1. make dambed sure there is not a more plentiful food ( like human poop in the sewer etc ) 2. finding out where the rats are coming from . 3. fix the issues of access and food or you will forever getting the rats comming back

I couldn't and wouldn't use poison myself as it could put me in trouble with the housing association, I will leave the problem to be dealt with by the housing association.

It worries me with regard to poisoned or half poisoned rats or mice being picked up by predators and what it is doing to them.
I know the change in the law only allows the use of poison in and around buildings but it is still a concern.

You have echoed my thoughts there which is why I (Personally) am against using poisons - However I do recognise that some times poison is the only practical answer but I prefer to not use poisons myself!
EDIT: I would prefer to shoot them with an air rifle but that would leave me falling foul of the Housing Association and the Police due to the close proximity to other neighbouring houses!

I get a mate who is a pest controller to poison the buggers as its the only practical way of controlling them. He said that our dog would basically need to eat at least 3 rats with stomach contents etc to affect her. I have never found any of the rats dead so they obviously head back to their nests to die.

Have you ever had rats invade your home though? its serious beyond just the deadly diseases they carry , wiring is often attacked leading to house fires or re-wiring / and modern plastic plumbing being chewed ( as rats teeth keep growing they have a need to chew) . dead rats should be quickly removed and preferably burned in an incinerator or other proper means . They don't go far with professional grade poisons, stuff from the garden centre etc ? junk !

Too many variables to answer the question. You can use non toxic monitoring to permanent baiting and everything in between. Some contracts are every 28days/month others every 6wks, bi monthly, quarterly etc etc.

I expect who ever paid the bill don’t want to pay for a decent survey and investigation. You can write a load of recommendations but can’t make them do them.

Could be a problem address. I had one yesterday, rats in three gardens. Middle garden was a jungle with old chicken coup and food on floor.

Depending where you are there is some resistance to the anticoagulants of difenacoum and bromadialone. Mostly in the south.
In the Scottish central belt as well by some accounts.

The other bit of info I heard recently was that the Vitamin K supplement in chicken/hen feed reduces the effectiveness of the poisons

I think in Scotland there’s only resistance to warfarin and coumatetraly, could be wrong.

Cant comment on the VK supplements but I've not read anything official from the science geeks. But I did hear something similar in a farm shop over the winter. I’ve experienced resistance twice using difenacoum. Switched to Brofadiacoum and problem solved.

Yet to find a rat that couldn’t be killed with correct rodenticide. I don’t use a lot of it. Harmonix and selontra are very good these days.

Hello, I have tried a few Rat Poisons on the Farm, Best was Jaguar pink blocks, There was some like coated grain that i put out but it was useless,
