Good eventide all,

I am putting back together the above action/stock - please can you advise where I can establish the torque figures or advise what they should be?

Lovely rifles!!

Tighten down the back screw first tight, then the front one.

If you feel brave enough bed around the recoil lug and up to the first inch and a half of the knock form of the barrel.

It should easily shoot 3/4" without too much trouble.

Let us know how you get on!

Haha, yes. I was told that by an old smith years ago, and it has always worked well. I love Mauser 98's, have had lots of PH's, husqvarna, DWMs and oberndorfs etc. I have 4 mausers at the moment .222 mini Mauser, .270 Oberndorf, 8mm DWM and a FN 9.3. all shoot well under an inch.
Oh and a .308 plastic fantastic m84 Kimber a mini Mauser basically.
The PH M81 is a great rifle, I had a 7x57 that moved on recently and I am still mourning it.

If the M81 has the same rifling twist rate as the 6mm Winchester M81 that I once owned bear in mind that it may not stabilise non-lead 100 grain bullets or similar. So if that is what you find don't necessarily immediately blame the torque or the bedding when the rifle is first test fired in its stock.

Gen'lemen,

Thank you for your replies and thoughts. I recall scribbling in a notebook a good while back 30ft/lb front and 35ft/lb rear, with front done first...........where is the notebook, :(

Interesting about the bedding - seems to have been done, though not by me as purchased new way back in time, from Ian, Windrush Guns, Winey; I cannot remember seeing it when I had the stock 'rejuvenated' few years back. Back screw first - again I cannot remember which way I tightened them when putting back after the refurb.......... :( Indeed it does shoot well, with the its Canjar trigger and better 3-position safety!

These posts keep reminding me that I really, really want an M81…

Nostalgia, they’re lovely, but no custom Mauser. M81’s, FN C rings, Hussars and ZG47’s were some of the best Mauser factory offerings made. The great thing about them all is they could be fine tuned both on metal work, stock work and trigger work to create an absolute wonderful rifle

There were two at McAvoy guns. Both ex-mine I'd add. A .270 WCF and the 6mm Remington that cam from Mick Shepherd of Mick's Guns. I don't know who now has that stock from the Wigan shop. I do regret selling the 6mm. I also had one in 7mm Remington Magnum that wouldn't load the second round from the magazine...if you see that one avoid it!
