Photos wrong way

Auto rotate is disabled and still won't work. Pics are right way up in gallery just move sideways when uploaded on here
As other have said, its because you have taken the picture with your phone in landscape mode. When you post, it loses that "it's in landscape" tag and appears rotated. Try posting a picture taken in portrait alignment - I bet it won't be rotated. If I'm correct, sadly you will need to edit and save the picture on your phone rotated for those you wish to post. I had this happen to me a long while ago (iOS) and had to do the steps outlined. It was a real PITA! In my case, an iOS update fixed "something" and I no longer need to go through that faff.

Try editing the photo and rotate 90 anti clockwise, save it and then load on here.

Interestingly photo is taken in portrait orientation and uploads in landscape. If I rotate 90deg anti-clockwise it comes in rotated 90 degrees anti clockwise. 😂

All photos are taken in portrait mode ..never had this happen before.

Curiously, some photos I have shared from my phone via messenger apps have had same issue in that the recipient sees image rotated or flipped 180° compared to how it is stored on my phone. Very odd because it did not previously affect images sent between those two devices.

To post images on SD I always transfer to PC from phone and then edit and crop image on PC before uploading. Done this way, all images render fine on SD.

My guess is that a phone setting has been modded in a recent software upgrade....

No recent upgrades ..there's a ghost in the machine

it's your phone that's doing it

I have confirmed examples on my phone of this phenomenon:

  • 5 portrait format photos taken of the same subject with a few mins between shots - two of five images are stored in landscape format but...
  • ...the EXIF data on the landscape images definitely shows that correct re-orientation requires a 270CW rotation and the right-way-up images have no EXIF offset.
  • Note that the receiving/viewing platform may not honour EXIF offset data. [if I understand @csl correctly, SD strips the EXIF data, so image must be uploaded right-way up]

I have a theory: If you view a web page on your phone and it is too wide for portrait rendering, you tip the phone on its side and the image is easier to view. I have noticed it takes a while for image to rotate. So perhaps there has been some tweak to the framework or HAL layer in mobile phones that delays hardware orientation detection?

Applying that to the sideways photo issue we are seeing: the photo you take will always take a second or two to process before you can view it on your phone's photo gallery. Is it perhaps the case that if the phone is moved whilst the image is being written raw>jpeg the orientation toggles? [but EXIF records true orientation of raw]

I've tried adding pics that were taken years ago and they are still rotated ?

Perhaps the SD image importation previously read and applied EXIF orientation data before stripping and no longer does that? Only @csl can advise.

[BTW, stripping EXIF data is a VERY GOOD thing for any website to do. Natively, smart phones embed an awful lot of data in EXIF including location data. Imagine if your uploaded images of prized permissions were broadcasting their location to the web? Similarly, we share images of our favourite firearms...]

I'm really sorry, it seems there is a bug (after all the arguing about image rotating in the past ) after all. :coat:

But it is what I thought...
Won't happen to a graphic or edited photo. Will happen to an unedited photo where EXIF orientation data is not honored. An edited photo resaves to the orientation it is being edited in. Your camera roll has pictures taken from all different orientations (phone positions) and your phone's software corrects this by reading the intended orientation (via EXIF). This EXIF data (it looks like) is not being honored in 2.3.7.

Temporary fix... if you are getting a 90°/180° change, try using this icon to attach images if you haven't already:

We have a patch.

Could someone affected by the 90°/180° mis-direction try the "Attach files" way, see if we fixed it.

Cheers!
