picatinny to camera tripod

Drill and tap a 1/4 whitworth hole, you will find the tripod thread is 1/4 Whit as they all are....
Pic male or female?
I always use a 1/4 x 20 UNC when making camera adaptors and the like.
1/4 Whit is very similar though and may well fit, UNC being 60 degrees whereas Whit being 55 if my memory serves me right. Same TPI.

They are 1/4 whit...not unc...lol... a .243 is a .308 case but not .243 lol
for the short number of threads it will bodge on but still 1/4 wit.

Not wanting to make a fuss but this was taken from the Nikon site-
The tripod socket used on Nikon cameras is currently 1/4 in. (ISO 1222). The ISO 1222 refers to 1/4-20 UNC standard.

Far play but what I would say is they found it fitted, all my cameras from the 70, is 1/4 whit so as I said the short distance then they don't bind.

Historically, The Royal Photographic Society recommended the thread standard for attaching older cameras to tripods was 3/16-24 BSW (3/16 inch nominal diameter, 24 threads per inch), or 1/4-20 BSW[4] for smaller cameras and 3/8-16 BSW[5] for larger cameras and pan/tilt heads. In this application, the BSW and UNC thread profiles are similar enough that one can mount a modern camera on a legacy tripod and vice versa. The UNC threads are a 60-degree angle and flattened, whereas the BSW are a 55-degree angle and rounded crest. However, at least one English manufacturer uses No.1 B.A. (British Association) for its tripod mount thread.

A double win for both fitting.

You are most probably spot on in that the UNC fitted and became the standard when the poor Whit fell out of favour! No rework or change to be done to old equipment that way! There are subtle differences, which would accumulate on a longer thread and most probably bind.

I feel bad now that we have gone off on a tangent from the OP's question!
Is it a picatinny rail tapped with a 1/4UNC thread to mount on a tripod that you want? If so shoot me a PM and I will make one for you.

Lol, I am going to get a 1/4 unc go/no gauge and test it or I won't sleep at night lol..

some dopy #### picked up a 1/4 unc bolt and then wrote a document to cover his/her arse lol

I have a modern underwater SLR camera and a 1971 Nic 3 both with the same thread..

Nice of you to offer the work for the OP :tiphat:
