Pickup Canopy

Afternoon all,

Hope you are all well, all things considered.

Looking to change the roll top on my pickup to a canopy to make better use of the space. I have however never had a rear canopy on a pickup so clueless which one to and they all look very similar!

Anyone got any recommendations?

I am looking for a fibreglass / ABS cover rather than an aluminium one, and have looked at Truckman, Alpha and Aeroklas among others so far.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Simon

Simon check out NJ Aluminium... I know your said your not partial to aluminium but they are so much better. They will make you a bespoke aluminium canopy for the money you'll be paying for a nasty plastic one. There workmanship is excellent! Off the one I had made they've made several sales through friends who have seen the build quality and placed an order with them.

I had one built with a separate locker for my rifle and expensive kit, to keep it clean and separated from mess and possible damage. One thing though is lead time as there built to order and with CV19 it may take a while to get one built...

Depends what you want to put in the back. I chose my Aeroklas because it has a double layer headlining. Better insulation and less condensation for the dog. It isn’t the most expensive on the market, but it does what I want it to do. I doubt you’ll do much searching for truck tops without coming across 4x4AT at Leeming, they are decent people to deal with.

I also chose a Bed Rug liner for mine. Together it’s a pleasant environment in the back.

I've got a truckman and tbh they aren't amazing, the central locking is going on it, and break light had blown and hinges on the top are starting to fail. It's 5 years old

The aluminium ones is what Il be looking for next, they look smart and are durable

Hi Simon I am in the same boat as you . There's a chap advertised on evil bay he referbs canopys he's in Norfolk he's got lots of makes and colours around the £ 800 mark

Thanks for all the feedback, really appreciated; going to go and have a look at an Alpha later in the week.

If I didn't have to use the vehicle for work I would go with an aluminium or steel canopy, but don't think I could get away with one of these given the way I am going to use it.

They built one for me, large opening hatch that goes over the cab and 2 side openings one either side. You can get 2 people easily in the roof opening while Foxing and the 2 side opening for easy access to stuff in the back.
And a very nice family run business.

I’m keen on exactly that, what sort of cost was it? Cheers

£1,800, i bought a truck with a dogs danglies top, central locking, lined, lights opening windows really smart but utterly useless to me. Sold that and put the money towards the one from N&J

After typing my original post on this thread, I picked up the phone and ordered one for my other truck. As there in manufacturing there still operating through lock-down and have good lead times on builds at the moment.

I'm on my second pick up that I've purchased second hand and came with a Truckman top. They dont seal very well around the tailgate, the handle lock went on the first one - no access to the insides so had to cut a hole in the frame to access it, hinge broke - £47 a pop. Present truck was under 3 years old and hinge snapped. New one came, different design, stronger apparently - snapped after three months. 14 months later the replacement hinges snapped, thankfully I was able to keep hold of the top tailgate so the glass didnt break. Strutt was bent though. I did manage to get a strutt and a hinge out of them for free. Lock has gone now!
I would avoid Truckman!! Although I have the high top which is very useful for me.
