"Plant a tree in '73"

Does anyone here remember that? I know there are a few on here old enough.

It was a UK-wide thing.

My Sister and I each planted a tree - in '73 (provided by the school I think? - memory is a bit vague)
We planted them in our garden but Mom and Dad moved to a small farm that year so I never knew what happened to the little trees we planted - they most likely died.
(My other post this evening which mentioned my son planting a tree jogged the memory.)

I would love to know if anyone else remembers this.

More so, It would be marvelous if some-one does and has a current picture of a tree planted from that initiative. If they do it must be pretty an impressive tree by now.

Any takers?

Seem to remember something about it now you mention it as everyone was at it, but all I can think about now is Winchester 73.

Was definitely sexually active in 73 and had a bsa airsporter was not really into planting trees though more into killing things and fishing, among other things.🙂 edit. Plenty of shooting off! 🤪 sorry.

Yep, remember it - I am the eldest of 3 kids & we each got a 'Christmas Tree' from school.

One died pretty soon after planting; the other two did very well, one was planted in the back garden & the other in front of the house. For some reason a line was tied around the one in the back garden & then forgotten about so the tree ended up growing around it so that one very windy day the top snapped off, nature took over & a lower branch took the lead but the tree was always out of proportion after.

The one in front of the house got lights put on it at Christmas from the time it was about 3' high onwards - eventually when it was taking 4 sets of serious outdoor lights to cover it & was nearly as tall as the house it was decided it needed to come down for safety.

I don't recall when the one in the back garden was removed but it's gone now.

Plant a tree in '73
Plant some more in '74
Still alive in '75
Dead as Sticks in '76

I have little doubt that many of the trees currently being planted at the behest of do-gooding Guardian readers will suffer the same fate.

I remember "plant a tree in '73" and I did, I was also involved in "plant some more in '74". Last time I passed by, some I planted were still growing. I got involved through Scouts and a good few were planted in local council ground. I don't have pictures but they were cherry for urban areas and so not intended to grow large.
