Please recomend me a knife

Just to re-iterate an important point, sharpening is a BIG issue for me. I mean, MASSIVE issue. I have absolutely no idea how to do it, and no confidence in doing it myself at all. There is a shop in Lancaster that sharpens knives etc, but it costs £5 per session, so I am in for a very expensive purchase if I buy a knife that needs sharpening after every use. This is why I mentioned in my original post that the knife has to keep its sharpness. So what would people advise me? Is there any other knife people know that will require sharpening much more seldom? This is why I mentioned Helle, because someone told me they own one and they have never sharpened it...

If that's the case mate you should look at Cutco knives. I believe they offer a free? sharpening service and a lifetime guarantee with their knives

Just buy a cheap clipper then and get one of the simple draw through kitchen knife sharpners or them little flat pocket ones that I can't remember the name of. They work but tend to be quiet brutal with regards to how much metal they take off. But they'll make it sharp enough. Never let your knife go blunt which is one of the biggest mistake people seem to make. Sharpen it after every outting where it is used (maybe not every time but don't leave it till it resembles a spoon).

I use three knives for all my deer needs;

1/ an EKA swingblade. This is used mainly for skinning and dressing the deer.

2/ A Spyderco "Bill Moran"

3/ A Mora "Bushcraft Forest"

I tend to take the Mora out with me on my belt, the Bill Moran stays in my pack in the vehicle, all three are marvellous, but the Bill Moran takes the best edge.

The best value knives I have seen are the ones advertised on this site by Chickenman, made of 01 tool steel. I am saving up hard for one! Being 01 steel you would find it needs little sharpening.

I have heard good things about these, but haven't tried one myself.

Sharpening is not the voodoo some think especially in the modern world. There are so many specialise sharpeners that even you can manage it. The sharpeners don;t have to wreck the knife either and need not be bulky and cost a small fortune like the complete Lansky set up.. have a browse around the web and see what there is and give it some thought.

I like the Spyderco sharpeners, very easy to use and there is helpful DVD.

I have a friend who makes knives and swears by a Chef's Pro 110 (I think it's a 110, it may be a 120?) for sharpening them. He makes sticky sharp knives, as sharp as anything i have ever known. They do not have good write ups though.

if a lansky diamond sharpening kit wont put a razor edge on your blade its scrap, get another knife,i didnt realise til i read one of the threads that they make knives that dont go blunt, aint convinced...........

Carbon Mora sharpen with lansky system then strop the edge, it will make the knife silly silly sharp...neil

Thanks for the amazing comments guys, I really appreciate it. I understand your point about these sharpening systems, indeed you make it sound easy and straight forward. I guess my problem is that not only I am terrified of trying to sharpen the knife myself, I actually am resisting to do so as I simply do not have the time or the desire to do so. I know it sounds lazy or stubborn of me, but I really, REALLY need something that will be as low maintenance as possible. I guess I am asking too much and it looks like I will have to buy something and pay for it to be sharpened professionally every so often (digger, Cutco do have the sharpening service and lifetime warranty but still I have to pay). Unless there is something you guys can recommend I buy that does the job...

ok you dont have the time to sharpen a knife?

to be honest do you have the time to go stalking then? a sharp knife isnt an option its a neccessity (if you get a deer!)

because really one goes hand in had with the other

if your gonna use a sharpening system at cost every time then youll be knifeless till it comes back aint good

if your that worried bout it get a cheap clipper/ mora/ or frost knife.....in fact a 8 or 10 quid get 2 of em then buy a bladetech knifesharpener and use it as your carkeyring....if you happen to be in middle of a gralloch and your knife dulls...give it a couple of swipes thru that and carry on......its as simple as wiping your hands and as quick...and asimple a basic knife sharpening can get!!!

there is nothing worse than working with a dull knife and no way of giving it a quick sharpen....you WILL end up doing yourself some damage to your fingers and /or making a mess of a gralloch..i hate dull knifes.

and with a cheapo knife and bladetech theres no excuse or the worry of knackering a more expensive knife blade.

You will only pay for postage with Cutco. I even swapped my double D blade for a straight edge and bright orange, only paid for postage.

hi, tend to agree with what everyone else says, go for a frost/ mora, cant be beaten on price for a quality blade. they come in high carbon steel ( will stay sharper a bit longer, but can tarnish) or stainless. i see you are in lancaster, dont know name, but good shop in kirby lonsdale stocks them.

Already know guys moaning about their EKA, both knife build quality and the sheath falling apart within a month, almost resulting in the loss of an expensive knife.

Sorry its a no no for me

Hi,
do yourself a favour, spend a bit more on your knife mate, push the boat out the better quality steel the better the blade stays keen, a good quality knife will hold a good edge longer than a cheapy blade, when a good blade does eventually get dull, give it a few strokes on a japanese waterstone be as good as new!!!
get in touch with Stewart Marsh he will advise and make you one from scatch to your own spec!!!
You Know IT Makes Sense

+1 I use a mora 840MG (cabon blade), take's an edge like a Razor. The trick is to leave the knife
in a glass of distilled vinegar over night, which force's a "patina" on it ( the blade turns black)
No more rust! I do use other knives on occasions Gerber, Kershaw or Buck all fixed blade.
Althought I find the mora is simplicity in it's self and seem to use it more often.

Atb, Buck.
Ps. apply's to any carbon blade.

No-one rate Cold Steel?
I've found the £16 Finn Bear to be excellent. Also have a Pendleton Hunter which I am very pleased with.

i use a clipper all the time. i did have an enzo camper which was superb but i still reached for the clipper so it had to go. i wouldnt bother with anything to fancy as my knife gets used for gralloching to hide building so it takes some stick.
