ignorance
is bliss, happy hunting

educate us all then , because i cant see they spend it on improving breeds look at the bulldog , the fox terrier , the bedlington and many other once working dogs that have been ruined forever through breeding for looks and pound notes not working ability . Give me a kennel full of true workers sleeping happily after an honest days work rather than a stinking house full of over bred show boats with bad skin and sore eyes but lovely papers any day . KC papers just add £s to puppys and encourage over breeding , hang your papers next to the toilet where they might be of some use i say

Will,

you have not mentioned what you want the dog for? stalking or rough shooting for birds?

Whilst I am sure that a x bred dog is fine and many good dogs have come from crossing one has to ask why the breeder cross bred the two dogs in the first instance.

They are two completely different dogs and I am always at a loss to understand why anyone would want to cross breed two pedigree dogs that were bred obver countless years for a specific purpose.

I am sure there are many who run dogs for both deer and rough bird shooting, but if you are after a dog for deer stalking I would stick with a breed bred for the job.

I wish you luck with whatever you decide.

Labrabors where bred to retrieve fish lost out of the nets, but they make cracking bird dogs and very good blood tracking dogs, dont see to many sticking to what they where bred for. lol

I am not a fisherman, I am a stalker :D as I said before I am not knocking anyone owning or using a cross breed, but if you are looking for a dog to use for deer stalking then get the right one. A Lab will do it, and if that suits you fine by me.

Take that BOULDER, OF YOUR SHOULDER,the thread aint about the KC, the KC doesnt breed dogs, seeeemple, but i will give you one example of dogs getting bred too the standard/working, KIMMAX GWPS, compete in the VDD, competions in breeds homeland, where coat, dention, conformation, temperament is part and parcel of thier assesments, because a dog is meant too look, move, for aspecific purpose, thats why the breed has a breed standard, it aint for any tom dick harry, who doesnt understand what there doing too go off on an tangent, and ruin, crititise any fine gundog breed let alone the gwp, seeeempple

Will , get yourself a cross mate , i cant see its worth paying a couple of hundred pounds more for a bit of paper . God knows what will be written on it anyway mate as it would appear "there seeeempple" good liuck Will ;)

I suppose for me it's about traceability
thats why KC reg dogs do hav some use, not all breeders are saints but genuine ones are
so to read a pedigree it tells me a lot about the history of the dog about the genetic defects that are carried in some lines that are more prominent than in others
wether yo like it or not it will save you a load of hassle, heartache and money if you can choose the right lines
which you can't really do this to great effect if you don't have some sort of tracebility
would be interested in knowing the average age span and defects that such X-breeding from labs to GWP's hav if anyone can divulge such info?

Dave that is very true untill the time you hav a pup that has an eye defect because you bought or bred from a dog that was never optigen tested or even tested for CNM

plenty of breeders hav bred such lines for years but you are the person buying that ends up with a defective puppy somewhere down the line which could of been prevented just by looking at the papers a little closer and doing a bit of homework
no point hav a good dog that you hav to PTS by the time it is 5 and worse still may of sired a dozen or so litters so passing on such defects
Papers may not make the dog but they do help in the fight to produce healthier ones

The problem I see X breeding today is our modern world does not allow the poor dogs to be culled out, breeders of old would “keep the best and kill the rest” until you had a breed standard which had all the good traits left and the dogs carrying the bad ones were in the ground.

So you buy you GWPXlab or Springador ect, but you could get the best of both breeds or the worst of both, there is no way of telling with a 8 week old pup, no pedigree no way of tracing how good or other wise the parents were, if they had any health problem etc It is a hell of a gamble, it takes 2 to 3 years to train a dog, do you want to take the chance on spending that time on training one that will always be compromised because it had the worst traits of both the original breeds?

Most working dogs are at least impart a family pet, and few owners are objective enough to see that the dog they have is inferior, when it reaches 18 months old and it is obvious that it is not up to the job will the owners of these dogs take it for its last short walk so that the breed as a whole can benefit? then start again with a new pup of the same X breeding until they find the good ones that are worth keeping?
