Police missed a dog at 5 yards!!!!!!

Hot off the press this one chaps...My sister in law called this morning to tell us she had been woken by 10 police officers surrounding the house 2 doors down from her house. Its actually quite a nice street so it was a bit of a shock. One officer was leaning over the bonnet of her car with his rifle. They called for the occupant to come out but they didn’t...Then they let the dog out and one of the officers fired his carbine(or shotgun not sure) at it twice as it ran towards him...He missed with both shots and the dog turned tail and ran behind the house..Maybe he was a dog lover and just wanted to scare it off but his mates are going to give him some stick for that I recon. Apaprebntly the bust was linked to some armed robberies that have taken place around Cheshire so they had been told to shoot to kill if required...Not shoot to scare

A mate of mine works for the Manc Met and his job is to tackle the dogs during raids...he normally has some pretty nice dog chews on him, but certainly not a rifle! Sounds a little odd, perhaps they were shooting passed the dog towards something/one else?

To be fair, shooting anything that close with a rifle is difficult...

They carry a shotty too I believe, maybe he was using that but either way he missed. Id be very surprised if he used his rifle at that range. I believe that they normally carry a shotgun for use with taking the door hinges off if needed.

Why shoot the dog it is not to blame for the owners actions.not for us to judge if the person behind the gun/rifle whatever was in fear of attack he is only human.

Yes mate, I was as skeptical as you, defo true. And shes been around guns long enough not to jest about something like that Shes not one to make stuff up and judging by the state of my Niece (who is only 7) and kept saying there were loud bangs then 2 rounds were defo let off. She had seen soemthing moving but wasnt sure what it was but it was the local bobby that confirmed that he had missed the dog. Sure it will be in the local rag later.

You'd have thought out of 10 coppers though one could at least give it a whack with an ASP rather than the dog being shot at?

I have a friend who is a copper in Inverness who is mad keen of Staffordshire bull terriers, when ever they raid a house for whatever reason he is allways the 'point man'. He tells me whilst the arrests are going on and what have you he is rolling around the floor wrestling and playing with the dog. Never been biten.

Perhaps a simple knock on the door by a constable in uniform may have been a better way of performing the arrest. If your house is surrounded by a hyped up mob of machine gun totting police it must be very difficult not to respond defensively.

I met a Firearms officer on holiday a few years back and he told me that he was at a house of a well known drug dealer who had threatened locals with a shotty. He was well secured in his house and the front door was reinforced. He was told to take the shotty and take the hinges out with the copper filled bags
(not sure what they care called). As he walked up the drive the dealer let out his staffy...He said he shot it with the bags..imagine the state that would have made..

Agree but I guess if they were armed robebrs then there is a good chance they haev weapons so they just dont take any chances these days.

The people saying that you could hit it with a baton etc have clearly never had a run in with a big dog.

Ive got an ex police alsatian at the moment and anyone who reckon they would be able to quiet him down with a stick is more than welcome to come and try. Personally i would not wait until he was 5 yards away to shoot at him!

I have found previously that a fire extinguisher works well for stopping nippy dogs, it quietens them down and they get to live another day.
Failing that there's always the electric shield!
