Post your rifle setup including weight

Following on from a recent thread let’s see what you use. I’ve had all sorts over the years from Blaser R93 with a custom stock to my current stalking rifle that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Please post calibre and weight if possible. As weight is an interesting point when it comes to carrying a rifle all day or for three hours on a morning or evening jaunt around the pastures.

Current rifle is The Fix by Q wearing either a proof research carbon 6.5 creedmoor 24” barrel or a Bartlein 16” .308

Both wear an Oceania defence mod and I’m using a Bushnell LRHS. I’ve had all the big names now and this works so well I’ve not replaced it with another Schmidt, yet….

Weigh is 9lbs loaded.

Balance matters a lot more than mass weight...

Barrels, unless it's a magnum, 20-22" is a sweet spot. 16" really alters ballistics for most bottleneck cases but can be compensated with the correct choice of bullet.

Don't see how fluting/carbon barrels are worth the extra expense vs. a slimmer straight contour barrel. The Remington above has a pencil barrel yet shoots well.

Action choice, Tikka T3/T3x is very light for length but lacks the COAL for a true magnum. Rem Mod 7 is what the Rem 700 S/A should have been. Howa 1500 is a workhorse with all the mod cons (M16 extractor, Rem style bolt recess and good gas venting) but very heavy, even with the lightened action.

Sako L461/A1 is the only 'true' .222/.223 size floorplate production action that I am aware of. Rem M7 is actually about the same size with longer COAL and lighter weight.

Plastics stocks are usually light but have terrible balance and rigidity, also very slippy.

I question those using a chassis for hunting/stalking, ever go out in freezing temperatures?

If a carbon/fiberglass stock was not available, I'd pick a wooden stock with good checkering.

Most important is a good moderator (NOT a T8!!!)

I have been out in freezing temperatures and agree with what you highlight. A true life consideration.

One I have suffered! It’s not too bad though.

Paired with my hatred of rifle cleaning, this has alarm bells ringing...

Obviously they do not have too much trouble given that AI made the Arctic Warfare (think the skins help?) along with the fact that most chassis have some sort of rubber/plastic grip.

My varmints are not used for stalking/walking around.

Cheers

My heaviest rifle a Sako varmint with moderator and bipod weighs 13lb 6ozs (unloaded).
My lightest bolt action rifle with scope and moderator weighs 10lb 4ozs.
(Wildcat Predator on both).
The doubles with scopes attached weigh 9lb give or take an ounce.

As caberslash has already commented and I totally agree with him balance also comes into the equation regarding ease and comfort of carry.

Borden Alpine 243, Sunny Hill bottom metal, stainless bases custom made for Optilock rings, stock (if I remember correctly) is a Bell and Carlson which despite the bedding block I had pillar bedded. All work by Neil Mckillop. With the Meopta 6-18x50 it weighs in at 9lb 7oz.
