Potential email scam??

Alright folks.

Bit of a strange 1.
Just wondering from the more tech savy on here .

Is there any email scams going about that can cost me money if I only email a very strange account name?
The email account is quite a strange name anyway but then has a.
strange.name.5.00.dx@ gmail.com

I know they're used to be mobile scams where u phoned a strange looking number and it cost u a fortune?
Can they do something similar with emails?
Never seen so many random dots and figures in an email address before.

The long story is seen a tractor on face ache for sale, was for sale mid Dec, which I think was a genuine legit sale ( and im kicking myself i never followed up on it, but had a bad dose of lurgy, and it did seem to be almost too good to be true, but only slightly) although still seemed a cheap price but not silly cheap.

It has appeared again different user name, different location, but using writing and photos from the previous advert just smells a bit fishy.
Eventually replied to my message but she ( new member on face ache) says ad is for her dad and to email him direct on this very strange looking email address.

It may be legit but it just something about it.

I wouldn't be paying money without going to see it and having a trailer with me to lift it there and then, so I'm not worried about that side off it.
But I don't want to email the strange address and somehow get conned by that or it infects me with a virus or something.

I have to admit I'm a bit naive with scams and never understand how 1/2 them work.
U used to often see diggers pop up occasionally online ridiculously cheap but I find it hard to believe anyone would buy anything with an engine and costs a decent amount without actually seeing it 1st.
Usually u say ur just down the road and say ull pop in and it all goes quiet and advert disapears.

Cheers

That ticks every single box for a scam. People think that obvious scams are selling goods at crazy cheap prices and therefore you would have to be an idiot to fall for it, in reality the majority of scammers price things as cheap but not ridiculously so.
Ask the vendor for contact details, mobile number, address etc, I guarantee that you’ll never hear from them again.

Seller (?) says the ad is "for her dad" Designed to evoke the sympathy emotion?
Different location, new FB member???
It stinks of scammers

I wouldn't trust anything from a new FB member.

Is the original advert still on facebook? (See screenshot below from my computer - If it has sold, type in whatever it was listed as before and search, then on LHS there is an option to view "Sold" items)

Will let you contact the original seller as well I believe (or at least see who he is/was)

Can u be scammed by the email address alone if i sent it an email??
I sent a message to the ' daughter' but have been scared to send an email incase somehow that scams me.
I reckon if I sent an email and asked a couple of questions I'd figure it out quickly, ( he won't know I've seen the previous ad)
It is quite a strange tractor but is exactly wot I've been looking for and they dont come up very often..

I do think the 1st sale was legit, although I may be wrong.
They had a few related type items, some are still for sale and have added similar stuff since, again was a female seller selling for dad and items at dad's farm but she had been on face ache for years and said viewing welcomed
I imagine it's fairly common sons/daughters selling stuff for there technophobe fathers.
It did seem legit, if I wasn't feeling so ruff probably would of took the chance to spend a few hours driving to see it.

Possibly it is legit and they have bought it to sell on, but just smells like they've stole/copied the add and they don't own tractor at all.

Scammers are everywhere today as it’s easy money for them to obtain quickly. I got a call just before Christmas purporting to have come from my bank, they knew my name and my bank they said there was SUSPICIOUS activity on my account ,
immediately you get panicky and flustered and that is what these people feed upon they asked me to go through security procedure with them before they could discuss it further.
⏰🛎️🛎️ringing in my head. Refused and they said they would close my account …..😳…….terminated the call.
Utter scum!!!

HOWEVER having had such an experience tends to make you very wary, I saw a telescopic sight for sale on Guntrader loverly scope but the guy wanted cash I asked if bank transfer would be okay “ YES AS LONG AS YOU LEAVE IT LONG ENOUGHT TO CLEAR”

I am sure he was very honest but leaving my 💴 (bank transfer) money and walking away with no scope 😳🧐 mmmmmmmm

sorry not for me ! Only millionaires and drug dealers carry that much cash!💰💰💰💰💰💰

USE YOUR GUT FEELING IF YOU ARE DUBIOUS.
Maybe it’s me with trust issues but money is hard earned better safe than sorry!

Take care troops.

Cheers Chris.
No original ad is no longer there and even this ad has diapered now, although I saved it ( never even knew u could do that)
It took her about 10 days to reply to me, but it was over new year so again gave benefit of doubt.
Plus I thought if a scam they would of replied quickly.

But the add is identical photos which were quite distinct and even the writing and it was a very well written ad.
Definitely seems very strange.

But my 1st question was how long have u owned it, if the reply was anything longer than a few weeks would be big alarm bells.

you cant get 'done' by replying to an email. you can get 'done' by subsequent follow up emails that might ask you to click on a link in the email, etc.

I've seen this kinda thing fairly regularly in other forums and groups - something for sale, the self same thing turns up a couple of weeks later/even at the same time - the ad's been stolen and they're just gonna do a runner with your cash.

Personally, I'd not respond, block the sender.

hope you get a good result :-)

A good agri dealer would be more expensive but for warranty test demo back up also who you are handing your cash to would be the better route. :tiphat:

If you email that address they will have your email, then they can trawl the internet for more personal details and eventually build enough data to start applying for loans, cards and anything else they can get hold of.

I have several email addresses but only one that is used for my stuff the rest are used for eBay, marketplace etc so then it separate me from the scammers

Aye ur right.
But private sales suit me better as no vat.
I'd never hand over money without going to see it and test it.
Then for me it more comes down to do u trust the sellers and do they have a decent reason for sale.

Even with a dealer bought machine the previous pwner could have done a bodge to hide stuff.
I always think with older vehicles not many folk get rid of an older motor if still running really well.

Plus it an alpine tractor and quite high hp for size and reversible drive with a cab, looks in good nick, but u really don't see them that often

And u can do all that just with an email address??
Bloody scary if u know wot ur doing.

I must admit I don't do much online so I don't imagine a lot of I fo out there about me, but probably surprising wot there might be.

I think I might get a spare email address anyway, something quite vague.
I might drop him an email, but there is quite a few Amber flags flying already, if not red.

Cheers everyone for ur advice.
I have bought a few things online and on here before and everything has always been 100% spot on.
But I'm also not going to send money very often without seeing the item.

No Vat is not a guarantee the kit is fit for purpose, and a email scam is %100 of your cash gone. :tiphat:
Keep away from the Auctions as vat and commission lol

This was sent to me today it’s in my spam folder. Most of us have to pay for our to licence so it’s a potential catch all SCAM!!!
If I was older, confused, flustered or preoccupied then it could be an easy mistake to make.

Take care the scammers are just scum!!!!

Alright folks.

Just a follow up question.

I must admit I never realised sooooo many scammers on market place, almost a waste of time even looking on there.

I've got my eye in pretty good now, can just about tell be the photo alone, really good picture and they have actually washed the machine ( not all farmers do)
Usually a decent model slightly cheap but not mental, usually a very well written add with loads of details.
If u wait a week or 2 u will see the exact same add pop up somewhere else.

Then it's a pretty young lass selling it who's only been on faceache for 1 or 2 years with no friends.

1 thing that is confusing me, they all seem to be selling 3 or 4 items but there always under £5k.
Does the law change if u scam someone for more than 5k??

I've had almost the same email address now for 'fathers' despite the different items being in Aberdeen, dumfries and plymouth.
The email is a variation of mark but then has .rk.500d.x@gmail.

It just seems a very random selection of numbers and letters I can't see anyone ever picking it.

I have to admit I'm surprised just how high a % off adverts are a scam.

if your asking this on here you already think its suspicious. don't waste your time you’ll get burnt. Especially if your mot tech savvy as you cant trust links or attachments from emails you arent 100% sure of origin. If the old man was tech savvy he’d make his own new ebay, if not she would give you his phone number.

My eyes have been opened massively.

But they're just so blantely dodgy although I'm not entirely sure wot some of the scams are.
Or who would fall for them as just so obviously not right.

1 the other week was just down the road, same dodgy email address, as soon as u say ur just down the road and u want to see it it all goes quiet.
In fact the local area had had a whole fleet of diggers, tractors and plant allegedly up for sale cheaply.
I doubt any have ever existed.
They do seem to pick certain towns/areas for a week or 2

It's the 5k thing I can't get my head round?
I assume there's a reason for it?

Must admit the adds are so predictable and similar it wouldn't surprise if if 1 person is behind the whole lot.
