Potential email scam??

My eyes have been opened massively.

But they're just so blantely dodgy although I'm not entirely sure wot some of the scams are.
Or who would fall for them as just so obviously not right.

1 the other week was just down the road, same dodgy email address, as soon as u say ur just down the road and u want to see it it all goes quiet.
In fact the local area had had a whole fleet of diggers, tractors and plant allegedly up for sale cheaply.
I doubt any have ever existed.
They do seem to pick certain towns/areas for a week or 2

It's the 5k thing I can't get my head round?
I assume there's a reason for it?

Must admit the adds are so predictable and similar it wouldn't surprise if if 1 person is behind the whole lot.
If you cast a big enough net you are sure to catch a fish.

I guess the 5000 might be a limit some of the sites use for vetting? Or just a figure these scammers have decided is big enough to be worth the effort but not so big as to scare people off? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Absolutely, they'll just scrape, and apply to, as much data as possible. They maybe put in an email here and there, because it's no skin off their nose. You need to get them to give you some real information that can be checked elsewhere (name of bank, PayPal account etc.) . Then you will start to see them disappear...

£5000 might be the threshold for HMRC scrutiny?

I thought it might be a tax thing.
But then if they're scammers they'll hardly likely to be paying tax.
Possibly not even in this country.

I wasn't sure if above 5k the police take it more seriously or penalties go up or something.
Just everything everything there selling is usually 3.5 to 4.5k

In the last few months seen it so often and now it's really clicked and seeing the exact same photos but in different locations

I think that single transactions of over £5000 do come in for greater scrutiny. Certainly when I've made online transactions in excess of that amount I've had a communication from my bank asking me to confirm the details before they'll allow the payment to proceed.
That maybe true for the UK, but looking at it wider than the UK anything will we a bonus, whether or not its £5 or £100K.

I'd guess the amount would be around £5,000 because that would mean the buyer wouldn't necessarily ask extra questions. 🤷‍♂️

Oh just go on Facebook Marketplace and search for a car. Pretty much any make and model. There are some very good bargains! Some of them for around the 5k mark for cars that usually sell for 3 times as much. If you click on the name of the seller, you can see all the other things he/she has for sale. There you will find a whole list of cars. All very cheap. And strangely, the photos are never in the same location! They are photos taken from when the car was for sale on some platform and of course aren't owned by the seller who hasn't got them. What they do is get you to pay a deposit (or the full amount if they can) to reserve the vehicle for you. Then, of course they, along with your money disappear.

As for whether replying to an email message can cost you, the answer there is no. Obviously unless you supply them with a pile of your personal details, bank account information and so on. Then all bets are off.

I've never looked for a cat but this is compact tractors and mini diggers.
But exact same thing, brand new profiles, for some reason all pretty lasses selling it for there dad.

I'd say could be as high as 70% of the tidy tractors are scams.

Just be really careful out there folks.

I’ve been told that a lot of UK agricultural plant and associated equipment is being stolen to order and smuggled to 🇷🇺 in order to circumvent embargoes etc.
Therefore, it wouldn’t surprise me if the same smugglers used this opportunity to mis-sell these items as part of their export process.
Be wary of pretty ‘daughters’ with 🇷🇺 accents!

HMRC won't wait for a tax return, they'll be straight onto it in case its money laundering, they appear to have greater investigative powers than the police, and the onus will be on the scammers to prove HMRC wrong. Didn't a prominent US gangster once get banged up for tax evasion in the 1930s? It seems to be the way that crooks get caught if the other law enforcement agencies have insufficient evidence to bring a prosecution.

Yep Alphonse Capone went down for tax evasion. And yes 5k is the tax alert amount for banks to alert HMRC.
I've dealt with it twice when Grandad and my dad passed away to do probate.
Email is a doddle to open up a new information world ,sold a car on eBay to a London polish fella.
He came to pay cash wouldn't give me his address for the V90.
Whilst he loaded the car on his trailer I get his name address and postcode from his email address.
Be avoiding any under 5k sales with crazy email names and no F.b,Ebay or Gumtree history like the plauge .atb and be safe

Curious as to how this can be done?

I am reluctant to give out my details but shops ask for them and especially when purchasing online you have to imput the e mail address before you can proceed to payment page …….the shops say it’s due to the fact they can send you a receipt/ tracking ( more likely marketing) .
Often wondered if shops get hacked just for the data of customer transactions ……….

But how can it be done from just your e mail address without giving you other details?😳🤔

Logged on to his ebay profile using his email and it all appeared as if by magic.
Scammers or legit you have to open an account to be on there .
And he used his own personal details.
All shops online or downtown only want your email so they can not only market you they can sell your details to other retailers.
It's a horrible world and there's a whole army waiting to take out a loan / finance in your name.
Or just drop malware into your phone or computer then they get everything.
