Practice for Africa

Good group. What range are you going out to?
I start at 20yds then work out to 50 as I get my eye back in.
Not done any practice for a when so will have to dust the gear off.
Shot my first impala 2 years ago on first trip to Africa.
I will probably spend at least half my time bow hunting next trip.

Good stuff! I shot with the bow a bit at school and always wondered about crossbows.

Given our current situation, and the unknown time scale for our return to some form of normality, have you got a plan to return to SA. I'd love to go back but have real doubts that it will be feasible in the next year. I wonder what the situation is on the ground over there.

Hi Woodmaster, these are indeed uncertan times but I am making plans to visit Namibia next June. It will be a rifle and bow hunt. I have a farmer friend over there who is setting up blinds for me are watering stations but I will try a walk and stalk hopefully with this chap.

I have used a crossbow in africa for five years now as two rotator cuff tears have put paid to drawing my compound,
Have shot almost everything from francolin to livingstones eland and it is devastating!!
Eland at 55 mtrs ran 25 mtrs and piled up dead. Anyone getting one for hunting will not be disapointed.
A compound bow is and always been my first choice but anyone with shoulder issues can do far worse than get a crossbow

Well it would have been if I had got the rest of my act together! Still, there’s always this year.....
I'm hopeful that by June 21 we will be able to travel again. Your guy there must be a pretty good stalker to get in range with his bow. It looks pretty simple, but obviously effective.
I managed to stalk close to a couple groups of impala , but had trees and grass etc prevent a shot. Eventually we stalked into some impala who were making their way to a dam. We intercepted them and managed to get this ram after about 20 min of waiting for him to present a shot.

Nice! Any chance of some pictures and data about the bow, and the arrows you plan to hunt with, broadheads etc?

Hi Lefthandguy, this is my ASD Monster bow ,55 lb with whisker biscuit and Copper John sight. i also have a bow quiver for it. My arrows are Easton Gamegetter XX75 with a 300 spine. I do have some Hoyt Top Cut 125 grain broad heads also some 3 bladed 125 grain of no name. I will be looking for advise on broad heads for Africa as there seems tobe hundreds to choose from.

For Africa you want the bone breaking best broadheads:
FWIW I bought some Australian Northern Broadheads. I thought I was onto a winner and they were sold as hunt ready. They were well made but dull out of the pack. Much much too dull to hunt with. Wish I had spent a few $ more and bought the grizzlystik ones. Would have saved a lot of time on the sharpening stone.
