A keeper friend has been loosing poults on a stubble.
So we went out last night after sue finished work.
10pm I arrived and we were striaght into the stubble field near his house where the fox was working.
Immediatly we got the eyes at the far end of the field.
I slipped out and over the bonnet.
The lamp came back on and he was gone.
Jeeesus he was about 400m's away.
We callled to no avail.
So we left and drove around the estate, only seeing another fox down wind which again never stuck around. It was now 12.10 and we were heading back home.
A quick look in the original field and there he was about 140m's away.
No time to get out it set of to run away.
Quartering away from us Graham couldn't see it in the red light, so i tracked it in the scope shouting right right right up right.
He squeaked and it stopped for a look back. Now broadside at about 210m's I shot freehand and down it went. *dance*
Been sat in the cab and freehand at a lampshy fox at that range I would say this is one of my best shots this summer.
Well chuffed
And stalking secured for a wee while longer.

May the force be with you.

I'm on fire at the moment, bucks are quiet so have had time to go out with the lamp.
Killing about 25 in 3 weeks.
Cheating with the rangefinder binos and a BDC turret.
set the scope x16 mag on the zeiss and a blitz lamp had some to far to print on here.:D;)
The only thing spoiling play has been the wind and rain and we are running out of foxes now.

Am i the only one that is going to say it?

210 meter, freehand shot, at LIVE QUARRY, while lamping. DAFT, no just down right STUPID. not something i would expect from a "professional"

This sort of shooting results in accidents, bad press for the shooting community and a general feeling of "COWBOYS" on the SD.

IMHO of course!

Skipp.

Skipp's
as a rule I would tend to agree with you
but you also hav to take into account the individual who was pulling the trigger , and I would not say John was a cowboy when it comes to shooting
he may hav his methods that differ from others but it does get the required result for him in a controlled manner or as controlled as it can be, but his ability with a rifle is probably better than most on this forum when it comes to live quarry
so I can't really agree with such comments and do feel this time you are being unfair under the circumstances

The reasult was a safe shot and a dead fox.
range and method irrelevant, the job was done.
fox dead, stalking secured for another season and no more poults to geting killed.
Please do not judge me by your standards, I practice all the time and shoot up to 200 fox a year under many situations.
I do not play at this game and get the job done, hence when not out stalking am required by local keepers to be out every night doing the job most cannot do.
I still don't use night vision because I can shoot quick and long under the lamp on ground I have shot over for 20 years and know every inch.
regards john

and johns had his eyes fixed :D gotta admit if i had a problem fox i would do a dance or two what ever the shot ,the stress levals go through the roof when you get poults taken anyway gotta go feed mine now
good hunting

In my experience there is a vast difference between a fox and deer, a shot at a fox with an expanding bullet from a full bore rifle is almost always fatal regardless of where they are hit had them run a few yards then turn over even when the shot was not ideal.

I have only lost one for certain that I know was hit[ though I have missed a few] still think it was probabably dead but could not find it, and before anyone comments, I am no novice I have been lamping foxes for a long time.
